Obi - I thought exactly the same as you after a few games. I loved it at first because it was so different. Then I got really irritated and didn't like it.

But then I didn't try and play the game like I did in WE7 and PES3. It's a different game, different controls. You need to learn to play this game from scratch. THEN you will start to enjoy the game, trust me :)

I really hope so mate, after I typed that post I had a few more games and it just got me mad, why have they made the shots weak as piss, just seems to be the same goals over again for me.

I am gonna stick with it and hope it gets me, just seems like a rush job to me right now...

For me the biggest issue was shooting. I thought it was weak, but you really need to get the hang of it, learn it etc. It can go slow, but if you want it can go really fast. Like dannyboy said, we gotta learn to play this game.

I remember when this game's release was like a month away. We were all salivating over anything we could feast our eyes on. Screenshots, gameplay and license information etc. Videos I remember were really what we wanted to see. We wanted to see the game in action. We wanted to see what we were going to be playing.Well now after everything we're playing it and more importantly I'M playing it :D . I've gone through alot trying to play soccer/football games here in United States. My only game console at first was a Gamecube which I played mostly Fifa games on. It wasn't until Konami decided to port it's WE6:FE to the Cube that I saw what a soccer game could be and even more so what a sport game could be. I have to tell you I was in awe of it. Everything about screamed Japanese quality. It's like they put their strong belief in discipline and respect into the game. You could tell it was handled with extreme care and craftmanship. It was artistically beautiful and wreaked of polish. The amount of animations that game had at the time really made it stand out as a stellar sport game and almost made it compete with the best games ever made in general. The Gamecube was the perfect fit for the title. It was a more arcade type of feel as far as player models (short and stocky) and to this day I'd still build a cabinet for it, paint the header "Winning Eleven" on the top as a header and make it my living room staple for "all the gang" to come over and play. It's gameplay made me look at Fifa in disgust the next couple of years with Fifa 2003,2004,and the newly released Euro 2004. I go back to WE6:FE a lot. Even with everything the US version of WE7 did right to improve on the series in general it never would outdo WE6:FE for me. But again this is because overall the Gamecube handled the medium brilliantly. Though the controls paled in comparison (the GC controller doesn't have enough buttons nor the proper control for most sports games in general) it made itself standout in it's simplicity, which made it one heck of a cabinet game ;) . Anyway I got WE8 by UPS truck today. It works with swap magic dvd boot disc first off and I didn't have to use anything else. The insert disc screen popped up and I slid the sucker in and achieved blue border status. I'll act as if I knew nothing for this past month while I writing my impression of the game. There was too much to discuss these past few weeks. License this, trick that and to tell you the truth it made me so antsy that I only got about 5 hrs of sleep per day. That said, I'll say that I played about 10 games so far and that my impressions of the game are on gameplay mechanics based off of what I played in previous WE's. You know WE's just have this look to them. They look good when your playing them and their look never tires me. I must have played hundreds of WE6:FE and WE7 games on my PS2 and Gamecube respectively and if I know one thing is that I know how these games run. They run off the premise that you can score from anywhere anytime. Games like Fifa predetermine where you can actually shoot. You could be far out on two seperate occasions, different wings and the kick and goalie save animations look the same. WE has always tried to make it more spontaneuous and authentic in it's presentation of the kick/shoot and save/score. don't what to say now then about WE8. it's almost like i'm playing WE6;FE again. The arcade feel is slightly back, yet I like that. What isn't back is the arcade models of players which I most definitely like. WE8 look and presentaion has NOT been talked about enough. I play the game on a 27 inch regular tube with S-Video connection. Playing WE7 only my tv I have shimmering effects that are on the player models and stadiums in general. As well as some pitches that sometimes looked like they were detached from the players so badly that I skipped those all together. again in WE6:FE due in part to the GameCubes hardware these "old hardware" effects were never there and made one beautifully ported game. looking at WE8 I must say, just like in ESPN's new NFL 2k5 the graphics are incredible for the PS2. For what the WE style is it's all here in full glory. A true testament that Konami have a grasp for the PS2 like no other developer (check out games like MGS2 and Zone of Enders 2nd runner for examples of their exemplemary work). It's like they took WE7, looked at it and said "make it smooth, make it more flowing' because i can only describe it that way myself. it looks great, better than WE6:FE and much much better than WE7. The shimmeriness is gone form the WE7 version, the pitches have been ALL corrected and the lighting is just right. it all make for a superb atmosphere to play in. What I'm playing is by far more player-controlled, more animated and more fun than ever. It's like they poured more sugar into the game and made something sweeter (like Splenda :) ) . Players look more life-like, players move more life-like and they animate even more realstically then ever before. That means that pretty much ANY situation can be pulled off in the game. Either defensively or offensively this game has never been more unpredicatble. Playing on higher star difficulty is really nail-biting at times. I mean it's like every player is antsy to get the ball and take it down to the box. It's really something when i saw the "recognizably famous" players act like..well themselves? Weird but it's really something to watch. It feels like it's been tweaked just right in my opinion. Passes can be crisp or lazy. Runs can be abrupt or slow. Skilled or stupid, get my point. it's really going to be fun getting to know the game in and out once again for this new number in the series. There have been other tweaks as well menu's, editing and gameplay modes. But if your like me you learn to involve yourslef in those aspects of the game as a side thing. I play friendlies, I play whatever whenever and WE8 will allow that. So to somehow sum it all up and maybe make this whole thing conclude I'll end it by saying this. Get the game because you love the progression of the series, because that's exactly what it is. It borrows things from itself and makes this years WE even more amazing then the last's.

:)

Obi - go and continue playing FIFA, thats obviously your game. ;-)

Listen Mate, I hate FIFA and have done ever since they moved onto the PSone from the Megadrive.

I have had practically every Konami game since the SNES days and have loved them all apart from the ISS series on PS2, I am gonna continue playing WE8 but am just giving out my impressions from the game, thats what this thread is for, unless you want me to lie about what I think, Sheep.

I Got my hands on this game, graphics look more detailed and the gameplay is good, faster and more sophisticated.

But what the fuck is up with the graphics overload?!
whenever I get near the goal area the gae starts choking and framing like a bitch, I really think it sucks, I'm talking about the Jap DVD which was released 2 days ago, I think that really sucks.

I hopew a proper release will follow that will do justice to this game.

Obi ignore them. Some people are stupid and think just because we're on these boards we have to KISS konami's ass all the time.

No bottom line is we're all WE8 fans and dont like Fifa, now this is an IMPRESSIONS thread, lot of us like the enw game and some of us might not, either way we should be able to write about things we dont like and negative AND positive things.

I hate users who make stupid jokes like "Go play Fifa" or other FIFA related jokes when a user expresses dissatisfaction at something from WE! lets face it the game is not perfect and so there's lots of things that might piss off a PES/WE fan such as ML reverting all edited stuff back when you start. Now if i say i dont like this.... are you going to call me a FIFA fan. that's stupid. Fifa is out of the question because it's the SHITTIEST game ever made... but we shouldn't just state POSITIVES about this game, we should also tell Konami how crappy they've done in some aspects of this game.

Have noticed a funny bug in WE8, which can be also seen on the Real-Valencia video which was released a week ago. If you select a Spanish team you only see the home team in the tunnel and at the presentation before the match. You see the line-up and formation of the away team, but the away team itself can be seen only after the presentation is over.
I don´t know if it´s necessary to choose 2 Spanish teams though or if one is enough.

Yeah seen it too dude.....
i used Real Madrid vs Barcelona in an exhibition match and duess what?...
there was 2 teams of Real madrid in the tunnel talking to each other!!
seems like konami did not notice this bug....

I had a proper bash at the sponsor, badge and flag editing last night and I have to say - it's totally amazing!

I managed to do the arsenal kits as perfect as possible (after a lot of trial and error). Being able to add a make is sheer brilliance because I've created the nike tick with a transparent background and then you can select it for every team who needs it just changing the colour of the tick.

The sponsor editor is very decent too (only shame is that a) not enough fonts and b) not enough font sizes). Leicester's looks particularly good.

My only worry is that when pes4 comes out I'll have to do it all again! Great fun but very time-consuming.

My Review.

Okay, here's my review after 3 hours of playing.

Me and my friend were so damn excited when playing our first WE8 game. It felt so... different. So slow. Of course my friend was bitching about that for 10 mins or so, and then totally forgot about it. :)
The game is intense, the tapered speed helps you grasp the game as a real one. I love that, the players are no longer superhumans who can reach the goal in 3 secs (yes, and that includes Henry). But dont get me wrong, its not SO DAMN slow, and its not very fast. I think Konami did a great job on the speed.
I've read many reviews in this thread, many made me scared to fire my first shot in WE8. Well, I think the shooting is brilliant! The ball feels so heavy, and so light at the same time. Your shots will not be blazing the grass ALL the time! And scoring from outside the box is tougher, which makes it MUCH MORE Realistic. I've also read a post which claimed the passes were as fast as bullets, well, I dont think they are. I think the speed of passes is perfect! And no, they're not as super-fast as you think they are, it all depends on the player's "Short Pass Speed".
The animations, are simply, beautiful. Finally we get to see the players being substituted. We see the player carried out for an injury, and then making his grand entrance again. Chesting the ball feels much more... human now. So is turning the player so sharply, they no longer move like robots. The celebrations, however, are pretty much the same. I think there is a few new additions, but its okay nonetheless.
The headers, are much more difficult to execute. Unlike WE7, which always had you heading as long as you have a higher JUMP and HEADER stat. The crossing animations are beautiful, because you can actually see the player stumble slightly to regain his balance after letting out a cross.
The GK, yes yes, this was an important issue for me, especially in WE7/PES3/WE7I. In WE8, the GKs are much more... fast and rampant! Once you're in a 1-1 situation, some GKs can take you by surprise, and encounter you with such high speed that you would definitely be caught off-guard! Nevertheless, there were times when the GK simply watched my friend head the ball into the net without even trying to deflect it. The errors do not occur much though, thankfully.
Oh yes, the slowdowns and stutters. This also made me very, very uneasy while noticing it in many reviews. Well, here's my opinion, the lag is not even discernible!!! I mean, I played at Tad Brick, in night mode, and with stadium effects and with both HOME and AWAY supporters on full ***. It did occur, my friend noticed it, I didnt. It's so minor, I dont remember me or my friends complaining "Oh no! It slowed down! I miss the header, This sucks," etc. Yes, I even played in the rain, but it did not ruin this wonderful game for me, because it really isnt noticeable.
Now, while choosing your players in the formations menu, Konami has added a very helpful option, which would assist in saving you ample time. When picking, lets say, a DMF, the game automatically highlights ALL the players who could play that position in red. So no more foraging for players who could play certain positions in a player's stead!
Another slight error that I found, not very grievous, but I guess Konami might fix it in PES4. During a match, my friend's players all ended up with dirty shorts and so, then he substituted Cisse with Henry, and Henry entered the field with dirt on his shorts too. :p As I said, very minor.

Well, I can honestly say, WE8 has livewd up fully to my expectations! I am not disappointed with it AT ALL! I cant wait to try out the Master League in PES 4.

My rating: 9.6/10

Here's my review of the game after a week or so of playing:

As the hottest weekend arrives in the UK, the Charity Shield kicks off, and Alex Ferguson starts preparing his excuses for another defeat by Wenger and his band of Frenchmen, I make my annual online trip to lik-sang.com and place my order for a Japanese PS2 and the new Winning Eleven instalment. Now, I know it would work out cheaper if I just kept the Japanese Playstation 2 every year, instead of buying a new one every time, but the lure of Ebay is too strong, and besides, when the UK version of Pro Evo comes out for that year, why would one need the Japanese version, with PS2 anyway?

From about June to August, I scan the web, looking for news, screenshots, videos, forums… anything to get some info on the game that will nestle in my PS2 for the next year. Pro Evolution Soccer 3 hasn’t left the PS2’s CD bay for more than a day or so since I have owned it, so that should give you some idea of what this game means to me. It’s not just me either. Hundreds of thousands of people worship the legacy of Konami’s football games. The FIFA - Pro Evo war may rage on, but there is really only ever one winner.

And so to this year’s offering. It is noticeable immediately that they have given everything a bit of a revamp presentation wise, and the menu screens now feel polished and more FIFAfied than ever before, which is no bad thing.

After a couple of hours of going through the edit mode, and changing the Japanese names of all the major clubs to their English counterparts, and playing around with the size of Ronaldinho’s teeth (a little odd, I accept) it was off to the cup mode to try my luck as England in the International Cup campaign.

It was here that I discovered something a little alarming at first. Had I accidentally picked up a copy of Fifa 2005? Wayne Rooney was standing in the tunnel, chatting to Beckham, and both he and Sir David looked exactly like their real world counterparts. Now the Pro Evo series had always managed to achieve a general likeness for the players in most squads, but to see a near perfect recreation of our nation’s heroes in Konami’s footballing kingdom was something of a shock, albeit a very welcome one.

After parading around for a while, posing for pictures that aren’t being taken, and bopping up and down on the spot every now and again, the players were ready, and the referee (now visible though out the entire match) blew his whistle to start the first match of a long year of football. As with every instalment of the series, it felt very different at first. Slick, crisp passing was the order of the day, with a somewhat hefty percentage of said passes being pinged with the outside of player’s boots. Some lovely new animations held everything together superbly, with players launching themselves into the air and deftly flicking balls on with their favoured foot to the waiting midfielder, who would turn with grace and finesse, have a quick scout about, and launch a soaring 30 yard pass back to his defence. (I was playing it cautious ok?)

And then it happened. The first goal. James had cleanly claimed an early corner from the Czechs, (realism can never truly be reached in any video game), and by accident, I tapped the run fast button. The ball dropped to James’ feet. Somewhat surprised, I punched the circle button, and before I knew it, Gerrard had chested down the clearance facing his own goal line. A quick tap of R2 saw him spin round 180 degrees, to face the foray, and he slipped a ball out wide to Beckham who squeezed round his defender and slid the ball through to Joe Cole. Now at this moment, I should say, that whenever I play a new Pro Evo for the first time, something amazing happens that I never see again for about 8 months. This time was no exception. As Joe Cole sped towards the by line, I backed off the sprint button a little and hit circle to cross the ball in to Rooney who was loitering at the far post. Instead however, of just crossing the ball like any normal person, Joe Cole, as he would in real life, crossed his left leg behind his right and launched a fancy pants ball right on to the head of Rooney who stooped low to head beyond Peter Cech in goal. I was gob smacked. Needless to say I watched that replay again and again... That is one of the major enhancements over the old Pro Evo iterations, signature moves. Nearly every major player has his own signature animation or move which makes him easily identifiable. Be it their running style, passing technique, or positional play (Lampard is always at the edge of the box, just when you need him, to rifle a shot at the awaiting keeper) things just feel right. The match itself seems quicker, and as far as I could tell, there is no speed adjustment setting, so you do have to get used to the faster pace if you have not played the game at a higher speed setting than default before. There are plenty more tricks and flicks at your disposal, from stepovers, to feints, to quick 180 turns. Tapping R1 whilst running also stops your player dead, allowing you to survey your options before delivering that killer pass.

Free kicks have been revamped too, giving you the opportunity to involve another player. You can have him flick the ball off to the side for you to either hit or run off with, have him step over the ball and allow you to strike for goal, or fool everyone and get the player standing over the ball to take it himself. Direct and indirect free kicks have been added to, so sometimes you will need a player to roll the ball to one side if you wish to hit a shot anyway.

The game play overall has been improved, with AI reacting more realistically to your inputs. The neat little touches, such as dirtying kit, injury time boards, extra cut scenes, shirt pulling and injuries (players now have to leave the field of play before coming back) all add to the feel of the game, and Konami have made a huge step towards Fifa in this respect. There is however one negative point regarding the game play, and that is slow down. The game really does chug along at a feverish pace throughout most of the match, that is until you swing in a corner. I tend to play the game a couple of camera views away from the pitch, giving an easier view of runs on and off the ball. Konami however frown on this it would appear, as the game drops to a few frames per second for most corners when the penalty box is littered with players. Granted, this only last for a few seconds, and isn’t really THAT much of a distraction, but it certainly is something that needs to be rectified for Pro Evo 4, if they want to keep their perfect football game creating record intact.

And so to the game modes. Master League has been bolstered with new teams, leagues and options. You can now choose to start a campaign with the existing squad, so pick Liverpool, and Owen and co will be at your disposal from the off. Players earn experience points after every game, with a breakdown being shown to you after the final whistle, so you actually see the improvements in your team first hand. The transfer market has again been enhanced, and you can watch flourishing new talent or stick with the big guns as you look to strengthen your squad.

All the other usual modes are present too, from cups to leagues, and the points system is still in place, allowing you to buy new stadiums, ball effects, hair styles (!) and the like.

The edit mode is far easier to navigate now, and the transfer system is in place from the start, allowing you to switch players from one team to another with minimum fuss, a must for all Chelsea fans. You can edit everything from the names on players shirts, to the colours of the team flag, to the stadium your team plays in.

And so it would appear Konami have done it again. I had always said that id EA and Konami would combine, and produce a football game that played like Pro Evo but looked like Fifa, it would be the finest piece of software that the beautiful game deserved. Konami were obviously listening, but decided that anything EA could do, they could do better.

The ultimate football experience? So far… yes.

Impressions of slowdown.

1)Slowdown is when the ball and it's players literally SLOWDOWN.
2)Slowdown happens inside the box when there is about 10 players vying for the ball.
3)Slowdown happens during the kick-in of corners and the resulting pass/lob is recieved and handled by the player.
4)Slowdown happens because the PS2's hardware is not capable of handling the games action in those instances.
5)Slowdown happens in certain stadiums that have the crowd seated in back of the net during a corner kick.
6)Looking at #2. Slowdown only happens inside of the box IF the team you are playing with is either licensed or has a ton of star* players.
7)Looking at #4. Slowdown happens because the game's use of lighting/polygons/textures(whatever) can not be handled well in realtime when #'s 2 and 3 happen.
8)Because of #7. Slowdown can happen when you pick different weather effects.

That's 8 reasons for WE8's slowdown.

I'm playing it for almost a week now. And with most games the first few days it is: yeah!!!, wow and big smiles but after a few days you gonna notice some faults and you don't like it anymore as in the first few days. But with WE8 I'm still have the big wow's and yeah's. Today I've noticed that when you are playing a game and you make a substitute with the member change selection(option 4 in the game pause menu) you get a cut scene of a 4th official holding a board and you see the players go out and come into the pitch.
Of course there's the slowndown, first I didn't noticed but now I do. And sometimes it's a little bit frustrating that it's not clear what an option means and you can not figure it out. But I can live with that.

So after a week it's still: :D :D  :D  :D
And I have good hope for PES4

Hi Guys,

I received we8 yesterday, and ripped/patched it with Fernando's translation patch.
The game feels something different in most aspects, for me it's a joy.I've played 5 matches with RM,left everything at default, and here are my 2 negative thoughts >

- the other team is not visible in the corridor (know it's already mentioned) which is a bug
- there is a pitch (sorry don't know which) where the grass is stripped, therefore the ball is not really visible, and playing in that stadium, the game is slow (changing the stadium results in much smoother gameplay)
- players are shiny, don't know why

Anyway the gameplay is different but brilliant and needs time and practice(eg. shooting)
BUT : It seems that the game is unfinished/not optimized, they should have give another 3 months for the developers OR PS2 is simply not powerful enough

Finally I can't wait PES4 on both ps2 and xbox which could result in buying an xbox if the game is smoother on that platform.

in my first inpressions the probs i have found are

there are to many silly free kicks like when your just running next to a player and slightly brush up against him its a free kick

throw ins seem to go to the team that was tackleing if you get me

like if i am running down the wing and the opponate tackles me they seem to get he throww in which seems a bit wierd

also not a fault but you seem to get a lot of penaltys :) i have had 4 and only played around 10 matchs. on pes3 i had about 10 pens over around 15 master leagues. suppose it aint a bad thing tho

1. Different refs have different strictness, you can see the frequency of fouls and cards he gives at the bottom of the screen, there are 2 ratings, from 1 to 3 stars each
2. No, you control the player who throws in now, so just throw in where your players stand and not where the opponents stand
3. Happens now and then, when I tackle sometimes I get the throw in and when the COM tackles sometimes he gets the throw in, I guess it´s like in real footie when you tackle a player and the ball touches the man who was tackled lightly, not a big thing though
4. Definately too much penalties, I had already 10, and I played 25 games in my season with Feyenoord so far. However I´ve missed 5 of them, seems to depend more on luck than on skills, which is bad
