It is happening again
If he does get it fixed, he could recover all his data at least. It means spending an extra £70 or whatever. I'd probably do that, but then I have quite a few games.

Ahhhh, so that's why the man at that shop only provides 28 days guarantee!

Yeah I'd of course be gutted about losing my game saves and stuff but I'd still have my PSN and all the trophies for that. At the end of the day, had this console since November 2007 - perhaps it's just had enough.

Cheers lads :)

You can always strip the hard-drive from the PS3 and back it up to PC. It'll require the right software and adapter but its possible.

Something about the online being dodgy or something, I'll try and find the article.

EDIT:

http://uk.videogames.games.yahoo.co...eported-to-office-of-fair-trading-21be16.html

Issues affecting the biggest-selling videogame of 2010 have prompted lobbyists to haul Activision before the authorities.

Since launch the PlayStation 3 and PC versions of ‘Black Ops’ have suffered technical problems relating to online gameplay. Indeed the ongoing bugs and connection difficulties have become such an issue for users that gaming lobbyist group Gamer’s Voice has decided to report ‘Black Ops’ publisher Activision to the Office of Fair Trading.

The fact that, though Sony claim YLOD is so rare, but my PS3s have had the yellow light fault twice in (probably just under) 2 years, do you think that would make a valid claim/argument for a free repair or some kind of extended warranty or even compensation?

It's bullshit, I'm reluctant to cough up again. If I do have to pay out of my arse again, I'll probably just go for the slim model for an extra £100 - it's just a shame and a real inconvenience. Also, do game shops accept faulty PS3s to be traded in? Perhaps as part of an exchange for a new PS3? ¬_¬

Have you had the console for two years, or did you get the YLOD in two years? Did they tell you how long they expect the console to last after each "repair"? If they returned it to you "as good as new", then you should expect a longer life than a year. However, it's probably not worth making a claim, to be honset. They'll probably make it a pain...

...I'd suggest getting a new console. I would've also advised getting some sort of accident & damage cover. You can usually get one for about £30 to £50 for three years. Just before the time runs out, you can "accidentally" break your console and get a brand new replacement, no questions asked. Well, that's how it's sold. I say "would've advised", because I'm not sure if it's worth it now. How long until the next console comes out?

You can try to be a bit cheeky and trade in the console for a new one, without mentioning YLOD. My copy of FIFA10 was worn out and would regularly freeze after a match or two. There was no apparent damage to the disc, so I popped into Game and traded it in for another game (obviously not a newer FIFA10). I also traded in my Xbox 360 for a PS3. They don't appear to scrutinise the traded in items, so you might give that a go.

I had the first console not long after it came out, so was about three years until it YLOD'd, and then after forking out for a replacement, "as good as new", it's gone and done the same after just over a year. So I've been owned two PS3s in 2 years, both of which have been cock-slapped by YLOD.

Cheers man. Guess the only way to find out is to get them on the phone anyhow. As much as I hate complainers, it's might be worth the claim. Was thinking about trying a cheeky trade, but I'm sure they'll test it straight away and it's completely buggered. Tbh, my memory's a bit fuzzy as to how long the warranty lasted on the new one and all of the minor details which are probably very important, so that sucks a bit and will most probably work against me.

BELIEVE
Buy an Xbox 360? :joel:

But seriously, Microsoft are brilliant in terms of customer service for the Xbox 360. I'm on my second (I think, maybe third) Xbox 360 in the past 4 years, yet I've not had to spend a penny whenever it's broke. Not only that, but whenever it has red lighted, someone from UPS (I believe) has came to my door to collect the parcel, transport it to Germany and back to me good as new within 5-8 days. They usually throw in a goodie or two as an apology for the inconvenience, often a free month on Xbox Live (which you can just sell for a few quid, so hey, you've even made money back ).

My brother has had his PS3 at his place for maybe a year and a half or so and it's in good condition still.

That's one of my fears regarding the PS3, especially as a Blu-Ray player. If the console decides to pack in after a while, not only is the gaming aspect gone, the Blu-Ray player is then fucked too right? To me that's disastrous, and with Sony not providing similar guarantee to what they do with all of their other electricals then it's too risky from my point of view. We just got a 32" Sony Bravia (full HD) downstairs, for maybe around £250, and we were given the free Sony 5 year guarantee. Why is this not the case with PS3s? Especially considering that PS3s are also very expensive, hell, even a free 3 year guarantee would be great.

Agree with everything you're saying, and as awesome as the Xbox is (and as stupid as this sounds), it just doesn't feel right! I've played with Playstation from the PS1 to now and play COD or Fifa on anything other than a Playstation controller is weird as fuck to me.

But yeah, I think Sony's handling it all really badly - not a good look.

The only plus is that I shouldn't have to worry about it happening again if I get a new slim model - as there haven't been any reports of that happening with them.

Yeah, I had a PS1 and PS2 as well, and when me and my bro got the Xbox 360 it felt weird as hell for a week or so. As time goes by you realise that the controller is just wonderful though and sits perfectly in the palm of your hands for a natural feel. It now feels weird holding a Playsation controller for me as you can imagine.

Good luck with the slim model though, I hope it doesn't break because that'd suck if keeled over and Sony did their usual response, of not responding.

PS: Downloading the new COD maps on the 360. :joel:

Not good.

Gamers are reporting that Sony's recent PlayStation 3 firmware "security patch" prevents users from upgrading the console's hard disk drive.

PS3 firmware update v3.56 – released last week – was described as a "security patch" by Sony bigshot Eric Lempel.

Some speculated that it was an attempt by Sony to prevent George "Geohot" Hotz's infamous jailbreak from working.

However, reports indicated the patch itself was hacked just days after release – and now it seems it has caused problems for unsuspecting PS3 owners.

Eurogamer reader Chris Marshall, aka Marshall2008, took to Eurogamer's forum to spread the bad news: "At present you will get error 8002f2c5 when you change your HDD and the only way to fix it is to put the old drive back in," he wrote.

"I bought a 320GB HDD to upgrade my 120GB PS3 Slim. I stuck the drive in and got the usual message about putting in a USB drive/stick with update 3.56 or newer on. I stuck the old drive into a sata caddy formatted it and put the update on. All good so far until it gave me error 8002f225.

"Checking online it appears to be a firmware bug which screws up upgrading your HDD. Unfortunately for me I wiped the original drive so I can't just stick it back in and I will have to wait for a fix."

Eurogamer reader Joseph Bat then pointed Eurogamer towards spiralling threads on the official EU PlayStation forum.

Just spoke to Sony Support and, to no suprise, they were fucking retarded. Even though they had proof of the last repair only a year ago, the best they could offer me was another repair.. for £130. :faceplm: Bitch even sounded annoyed when I rejected it, there's zero point in me paying for a replacement only for the warranty to expire and it to soon after RIP.

*sigh* New slim-line it is then, I guess? Seen some going for around £180. Might try to sell the broken 60GB on somewhere like Ebay, try to cover as much of my losses as I can.

Selling my broken one on Ebay if anyone's interested. :naughty:

Anyone know of or have any links for the cheapest PS3 Slims around? Not bothered about memory at all, and already have controllers, so just hope to find a (brand new) console for as cheap as possible really.
