4-2-3-1 has worked really well for me with Man United and Roma and it may work well for Fulham as well given the players you have:

------CB----CB--------
--RB---------------LB--
-------CM---CM--------
------------------------
--AM-----AM------AM--
-------------------------
----------CF------------

It is very solid defensively, and by using two CM's in the middle instead of DM's, you'll get surprisingly plenty of players moving forward for the attack.

CB's - high defense, no attack arrows
RB,LB - med defense, forward attack arrows
CM's - med defense, forward and back attack arrows
AM's - low defense, forward attack arrows for all 3 with diagonal-to-center attack arrows for AM's on the sides
CF - low defense, forward attack arrow

Cole and Perea should do very well for you at LB and RB. Pick your favorite 2 CB's.

Play Boa Morte as the left AMF and Ribery on the right. They should be perfect for this formation.

Mascherano and Bouba Diop as the CM's.

Only position that is potentially weak for you is the central AMF. Rooney and Totti are awesome here for ManU and Roma and it helps to have a great player here. Try Radzinski, but you may want to pick up someone else more suited to this role. They should have good technique, passing ability, and shot power and accuracy as they will get plenty of shot attempts from the edge of the box. Aquilani is a good young backup for Totti here for Roma so if you're looking for an affordable young guy to develop in the master league then would be good.

Good luck!

I beg your pardon?
How many of you have bought the official guide book?
The reason I ask is that it is packed with formations, including form A and B alternatives.

I still make my own rather then copying the book, but that's to suit my Master League team, and I like to play a very particular style.

Towards the end of PES5's life I made a load of templates with a new animated format but it turned out it was a nightmare to try and copy them into the game, cos the page stayed on for 5 seconds then changed, meaning you had to wait. So what I'll do is make them again, but I 'm going to steal the way the book has done them, ie. with defence, attack arrows and player info all on one pic.

Some of my favourite default formations so far on the game belong to Classic Brazil, and Barcelona. I have adopted the Barca one for my ML team, changing the centre man to a CF from SS, the left man to a WF to fit in Thierry, and stretched out the three man midfield a little as I thought it was a bit narrow in the middle. For my attacking alternative I pretty much push everyone forward a notch, add some arrows. And for the defensive alternative I change SB's to CB's and line them up with the original CB's, drop everyone back a notch and put high defence on the midfielders, and activate the counter attack strategy.

I will be back in the near future with a new design and new formations.
I have noticed that the teamwork stat, and formations make a bigger difference than in PES5, so all my obsessive tinkering is paying off now.

Yeah I bought it, they take teamwork into account which is usually the best at passing although they often include players I don't like. When buying new players its best not to bring in loads at once as there teamwork stats go down when you press circle in the team formations.

I beg your pardon?
And it really does make a difference, it was the same on the last game, but not as noticable as now. I've always been of the disposition to buy team players rather than gifted individuals anyway, so this plays right into my hands.
When I created my team, the first few games were tough, as the overall teamwork was in the 40's, now it's up in the 90's near the end of my second season. My midfield is 99 between the three players, and centre backs also on 99. Beautiful.
The forward line will always be a problem as strikers and wingers are normally low for teamwork, but anywhere in the 80's or above will be fine. Just chuck Cruyff in there, he has 99 teamwork, and works well with anyone, also a great goalscorer.

JMZ will you still be creating formations that are very effective to use against human players like your mates? I remember in your earlier days with formations, they where mainly based for using against human opponents!

I beg your pardon?

Hello sports fans, as promised I have returned with a new formation and revised layout. At first it looks like the picture is cluttered with a lot of info, and it is, but after looking carefully and maybe zooming in, it's really quite simple. For those of you who purchased the official guide, the look may seem familiar. I couldn't be bothered and didn't really want to copy the book pixel for pixel as I would lose my own style from the layout. I have however decided to go for all the info in one pic.

Each player has a defensive arrow in white for low, light blue for normal and dark blue for high, I understand the normal and high settings look very similar, but if you zoom in it should be easy to tell. Some players have attacking arrows, which are red and cannot be mistaken.

The number of each player, which relates to the list next to formation A, is located close to that player, with hopefully minimum confusion.

Each players position is indicated by the circle, just like the game, blue for defence, green for midfield, and red for attack. This also tells you where the player should be. The letter tells you what position they are, but if you cannot work it out here is the key.

G = Goalkeeper
BLUE CIRCLES
L = Left Back
R = Right Back
C = Central Defence
S = Sweeper
GREEN CIRCLES
D = Defensive Midfielder
C = Central Midfielder
A = Attacking Midfielder
L = Left Midfield
R = Right Midfield
W = Wing Back
RED CIRCLES
C = Centre Forward
S = Support Striker
W = Winger

Now onto the formation itself.
As usual it is based on my Master League team, the invinsible European and domestic Champions, Jimventus.
DEFAULT FORMATION
Based on the default Barcelona formation, I have made some slight tweaks to suit my needs.
The strength is based down the left side, with Thierry Henry furthest forward supported by myself or Ronaldinho. Also Ashley Cole gets forward to whip a ball in should the need arise.
In the lone striker role, I have gone for one of my all time favourite players, the powerful, skillful Eric Cantona. Does the job.
The right hand side is bossed by Johan Cruyff, his vision and ball control mean he can work pretty much on his own without arrow instruction, his stats are good enough for him to find space. The right also recieves support from Falcao with his silky Brazilian skills. Picked mainly for his teamwork and his all-round ability, very good at keeping the ball and playing good passes, sadly nearing the end of his career, but soon to be replaced by Paul Breinter, the German grafter.
Beckenbauer sures up in front of defence and is handy at shooting from range when he drifts forward.
In Defence the man/wall Frank Rijkaard makes sure no-one out-muscles in and around the box, and wins most headers, while Baresi's superb tackling stops most advancing attackers.
Krol on the right, adds to the total football flavour. If it's quiet down my right side, I'll let him off the leash with an attacking arrow and low defence status. But if it's busy, he is more than capable.
Teamwork and passing are the first attributes I check when picking my squad, along with balance and dribbling.

FORMATION A
Pretty much the same as the default, but a little re-shuffle to mix it up.
Thierry moves over to the right, if he is man marked this could cause major problems for his marker, dragging him well out of position, while Cruyff sits central on the edge of the box and Cantona patrols the left side.
I only really use this when the first formation is not working, or I can't find much space. I find it splits up the oppostions defence allowing midfielders to break through the middle.

FORMATION B
This is just a defensive, counter attacking version of the default formation. I don't use it much, but can be handy in those cup games when you are defending a lead and resting key players. It is important to have a bit of pace up front though, there is nothing worse than threading through balls that your forwards can't get to before a defender does.

When trying my formations you must remember that I play a very specific style. I keep the ball as much as possible and wait for the gaps to appear, recycling the ball back to my defence very often and stretching the play. Not only does this frustrate human opponents to the point that they start throwing in wild slide tackles and maybe get booked or even sent off, but while you have the ball the opposition can't score.
With this formation and team selection against human players (with equally superb squads and edited player) I have yet to lose, and have not yet scored less than 3 goals. But, it's early days in PES6's lifespan, I can't (and won't) win forever, one of my mates is bound to do a bit of recon on the site and try to counter my tactics. If you are reading mate, I'll be ready......

Great to see you return JMZ! Just a question or two: have you purposely pushed the left back a little further forward than the right back? Do you use a sweeper in this formation? Also I have a real problem with my wing backs always runnig away from the opposition winger and leaving him free especially against my mates, do you think this formation will solve my problems? I read that changing the side backs roles to centre backs sorts this problem out so I was wondering if that is what I should do with this formation especially the defensive formation B? Me and my mates each have about 3 or four teams that we use against eachother and I have Inter, Arsenal, Juventus & Real Madrid. Which of those teams do you think would work best with your formation and which players would you suggest for the formation? Also a usually create a super squad made up of 32 players from our four teams so if you could suggest to me the best players from those four teams for me to make a super squad that would suit your formation that would also be really helpful. Take your time with these queries as I am sure you will probably need to do some testing with those teams/players before you can get back to me! Thanks JMZ!

I beg your pardon?
The left back is pushed further forwarrd yes, just cos Ashley Cole prefers to go forward and Krol has high deence stat.
Try man marking the winger for your drifting problem.
I have found that changing full backs to centre backs causes them to drift into the centre and leave the wings exposed, also they tend not to join in attacks, leaving no options for passing forward from the back.
In formation A I have used Rijkaard as a sweeper to cover for Ashley Cole. I did start off using formation B with four centre backs but found it difficult to create counter attacks as no-one was pushing up from the sides.
As for the teams you have mentioned it is difficult to say, for now try loading it up and selecting auto select in the change player menu. From the top of my head I can't think of all the players, but if you go to create an ML team, then remove all the crappy default players, select the best from each squad and Roberts your fathers brother.
But from memory some suggestions are....
Inter, Arsenal, Juventus & Real Madrid
Buffon, Casillas, Toldo
Cannavaro, Salgado, Rob Carlos, Toure, J. Zannetti
Emerson, Cambiasso, Rosicky, Hleb, Lungberg, Guti, Helguera, Robinho, Nedved
Adriano, Zlatan, Henry, Van Nistelrooy, Ronaldo, Del Piero

I'm struggling for names without the teams in front of me, but if you have all the players in one squad and pick auto select it should do you proud.
I would say though, Buffon in goal, Cannavaro, Zannetti and Carlos in defence. Emerson and Cambiasso in midfield, and Henry and Van nist up front, they would be definates for me, but I think I may have missed out some players from the list so there will be others for the empty positions.
Hope this helps.

Thanks JMZ! I also ment to ask if you use any of the L2 tactics such as counter attack or pressure? I have tried a couple of games with this tactic against the computer and its pretty good so far but I need to learn to defend on this game! I was great at defending in PES5 but i hate it in PES6!

Alright JMZ, i've tried to create you're formation, are the poistioning of the players right?

Cheers

Mate how did you get that image up? It looks exactly like it would in the game! Not that I dont appreciate JMZ's template, I think he should just post a picture like this after he has used his templates for his formations so that they can definately be accurately created!

lol, it's just a screenshot of the formation in-game, I think JMZ has the PS2 version so it'd be difficult to get the images onto his PC.

Players?

Observer you are a legend! I have been playing the PES series since it was ISS and I have never come across as good a formation as your 3-4-3. I'd been winning quite easily on 6* ML but was a but bored of my old 3-5-2 as my play was a bit one dimensional and repetitive. This 3-4-3 is class, it opens the game up loads and makes it easy to tear the CPU to shreds and score great goals. In my past 3 games I've won 4-0, 5-0 and 3-0 again and in that time the CPU has totalled 4 shots! Brilliant.

Who are your players...is this WE9/PES5? Just curious b/c i play on 4* ML (on Xbox) and have been struggling to create quality chances. I do create chances, but just not good ones. I have won 2-1, tied 3-3, tied 0-0 with the same formation from Observer. It seems to rely to heavily on the Counter Attack, and when i played weaker sides they seem to sit back with defensive tactics - this neutralizes my Counter Attack.

Sometimes i would leave the Manual attack on full and the manual strategy to Counter Attack while they were attacking to see how they could handle when i went forward. Despite this i still didn't seem to create but 1 or 2 good chances.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? I used Observers formation and tactics.

Thanks

I beg your pardon?
Pimp, I do tend to use the counter atack strategy quite a bit after I have gone 1-0 up, as the other team tend to attack more and you are more likely to catch them on the break. The pressure I only use if I desperately need to stop someone passing around.
I use the opposite side attack every now and again to stretch the play if I'm struggling to break through the middle.

As for using the proper pitch design, I would if I could, believe me, it would be much easier, but I don't have PES for PC and have no way of getting decent screens from my PS2. If someone could supply me with a blank pitch, I could make them proper accurate. I feel your pain gents, I really do.
Danny, that pic is almost spot on, push the left winger a TINY bit wider, and push the Left back up a bit, apart from that it's right. How's it working OK for you?
