Yeah I agree with that mate, I'm having some trouble with a few players, most notably Arteta and Zabaleta who keep changing their mind from wanting to leave for a bigger club, and then saying they want to stay. Make your mind up!

The big guns are piling offers in for my first team players, and my players end up being unhappy cos I reject offers and they wanna discuss terms.

I'm really confused though, because we're in fantastic form, unbeaten for quite a while, and above Arsenal and Man United so I dunno :-S

That is the reason you are forced into being one of them top clubs, so fucking aggrevating.

May start a new one with Wigan tonight but no one wants to sign for me, well that was the last time i started one on the 9.2 patch.

As Wigan, in my first season, I bought David Aquino, Alberto Palocshi, Zucullini, Joe Mattock and some young Israeli Right-Back all for under £12mil. All quality.

I'll post some screenies l8r.

Me too started one with Wigan and managed to sign Javier Saviola for an asking price of £3.6 Million, Darren Bent for £7.5 Million, Razvan Rat for an asking price of £2.6 Million and a little Belgian named Axel Witsel who's been linked with Man Utd, Arsenal and Barcelona in real life for £6 Million.

3rd in the league after four games, three wins and one draw. Beating Aston Villa 3-1 away was impressive with Zaki scoring two.

Fucks sake!

I've been drawn against Man Utd again in the F.A cup.

I get them in the league cup everytime, the F.A cup everytime....and they knock me out everytime! Argh!

Ok so I've just started the 2023/2024 season with Portsmouth.

Right now we're seeing the second generation of players start to retire, which is causing me some headaches right now.

Here's some notes. This wont be all that structured because its like 2 in the morning.

P r e m i e r League (ugh, weird filter)

Yes, Port Vale are 3rd.

I'm guessing you will all be looking at Man Utd, Arse, Chels and Pool. Yeah, they're all shit now.

Saying that though, the top 4 and my beloved Pomp are the only teams to have won the title.

Norwich good lord.

I think Man City have been the most consistently strong team since I started, partly thanks to a player whom I somehow managed to avoid. That guy is Roman Zlamal.

God damn, at least he's 31.

Apart from that, the usual FM chaos has taken place. Spurs failing to stay up after their promotion gave me some personal satisfaction.

Something that surprised me was how long some of the original players lasted. Infact, Wayne Rooney is still Man Utd's first choice striker. Slightly surprising was the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo partnered him up until his retirement in 2021.

Steven Gerrard had a 23 year career at Liverpool amassing 637 league appearances with 96 goals. Upon retirement he briefly took charge of Sunderland before moving to Norwich.

John Terry also had a 23 year career at Chelsea, racking up 639 league appearances. A subtle fuck you to Stevie G Perhaps? Nowadays John can be found as a coach at Portsmouth. Chelsea offered him the role of manager but he decided to stay on as coach when I offered him £50,000 a week.

Andres Guardado retired in the summer of 2023 but didn't stay on as a manager thus deleting his stats forever. Thanks you knob. I know that he was transferred to Villa for £5 mil at 35 years of age, astonishing stats considering his age.

Now onto my glorious Pomp.

A 32 year old John Fleck is one of two remnants of the original generation in my Portsmouth first team squad, the other being Mehmet Ekici. I paid Birmingham £13 mil for him in 2013 and he's occupied the super sub role, plugging gaps in midfield where need be.

Roberto Sanchez Rodriguez. Obviously he's been a victim of the Mexican generic naming system, but the guy walked into the heart of my defence at the age of 20 in 2011. Now described as a legendary centre-back, he is getting on a bit but I still love him. His disciplinary record hasn't been the best but that's added to his Roy Keane factor for me.

He was able to accrue 21 yellows and 4 reds in 2011.

But who gives a crap when you have a 6'3" centre back with 20 heading and marking, 19 tackling with pace and acceleration above 15?

Next we have one of my first great signings.

Gabor Simon. My heart weeps to see time take it's toll on my beloved Gabor. But still the memories we have shall live on forever.

Ciro Ledda. Italy captain and Portsmouth captain until 2022. Ciro is god damned awesome. He, Roberto and Gabor composed an iron defence for over a decade.

Mohamed Traore. Probably the only player in my FM career who entered my first team after having been loaned to Belgium for 3 years. This is why.

Something that I find strange is that I like having a 30+ goal striker, but in my 15 odd seasons, I have only had one year where someone reached that barrier. That guy was Dave Pearson who I thought would have flourished into a top, top player, but is still pretty awesome I guess.

Oh yeah. This guy is my current captain.

Just won his third consecutive world player of the year award.

World Football

Karim Benzema was pretty fantastic. 4 time world player of the year, 3 time footballer of the year, multiple golden boot winner, yadda yadda yadda.

Jose Mourinho has been the England manager for the last 10 years, guiding England to World Cup success in 2014.

Portsmouth won their first Champions League in 2021, followed by their second in 2023.

Sporting Lisbon also triumphed in the competition in 2018 with Marseille winning in the year before.

That's pretty much it.

Oh wait.

Scotland are the current World Cup holders.

Any requests?

Awesome mate. I love how you've stuck at it and played through all these seasons. I've always wanted to do something like this but always end up starting new files. Is the secret to have excellent staff, particularly world class scouts?

I'm doing great in my Newcastle United game, but my name on it is Alan Shearer, not my actual name so it just doesn't feel quite right.

I could start one with Arsenal and see how far I get in it. Or I could perhaps start one with a mid-table team and see how mine progresses in comparison to the indisputed champion here which is Badgerman

I'm not too fussed on which team to start with for this mammmoth game I intend to do, so suggestions would be helpful. ;)

Portsmouth are actually quite a challenge right at the start. You have bugger all money, an ageing squad and the real threat of relegation.

What kept me going here was that I didn't turn them around in 2/3 seasons. It took 7 seasons to get into the top 3 and I've only just become the dominant team over the past couple of seasons.

I usually hunt down the best staff. When you reach a certain size you can go along and pinch anyone you want, so when the top 4 went down hill it was easy pickings.

I'd also recommend keeping an eye out on the legendary players who want to stay in the game. John Terry is a world class coach, Del Piero is a world class scout and so on. Scouting wise, I have about 6 of them and just have continuous assignments for them to roll on through.

In regards to youth players, something I've noticed is that there are medium sized clubs that are able to pick up world class youngsters on the cheap. Lens in France have gotten their hands on some incredible players over the years (including that Kouril guy). Same goes for this Angers SCO team in France, but they start off in Ligue 2 so I'm guessing that this is something that differs from game to game.

Tactics wise, I always used to use a diamonf 4-4-2 with a defensive mid and an attacking mid, but ever since they brought in the 2D pitch it just doesn't seem to work. I just stick with the default 4-4-2 with the left and right mids pushing up.

One thing that I've found quite interesting is that there isn't a great pool of talent now that the originals have retired. This has pushed transfer prices up like mad, I was able to sell a 22 year old striker with pretty average stats for £28 mil to Arsenal. Actually, can anyone tell me what's so special about this guy because I must be missing something here...

In his first Arsenal season he scored 29 in 38.

I think if I ever dropped a bollock, selling him might be it.

They haven't fallen that far actually. Finished 6th in the Championship, knocked out in the playoff semi to Bristol City.

edit: I've got French, Spanish, Italian and English leagues loaded.

Let's have a lookie at Spain

Pretty boring I guess.

Italy

Udinese are a turn up for the books, I think. I'm not up to scratch on my Italian football so I'm not sure of their EPL equivalent.

France

Started out pretty dull with the traditional Lyon domination before livening up in recent years.

FC Sete came up from the third (and lowest loaded) division to win the league, a nice story to warm my cockles.

Who is the most successful ex footballer manager Badgerman? Gary Neville and Joey Barton are about to be sacked from Bury and Exeter respectively in my 2019 game and it's not surprising at all really.

Raul has done well in my game.

He took over at Zaragoza, finished 3rd in his first season and qualified through the CL group stage. Then went onto Getafe, didn't do much apart from take them to 7th.

Went to a mediocre Liverpool team for 1 season and finished 13th

Then Real, of course, came in for him. He's won the league twice in 3 seasons and has won a handful of cups as well.

I reckon Gerrard will have a decent managerial career. He's at (goes to check), well he was at Norwich before he got sacked and now he's unemployed.

I bet he'll retire now just to spite me.

Del Piero is an amazing scout, though. So there's a success story.

Decided to re-install the game and give it a quick bash. Oh dear.

Firstly got a message about an old database I created not being able to load (I don't know why it should mention this as it was deleted ages ago), and then when I went into preferences FM crashed altogether.

And that's why I hate this game so much. :faceplm:

This game just repeats itself year after year.

What draws me is how the next generation of players comes through. After that though, I tend to lose interest and tend to give up when my team starts to hit 30 and die. The problem lies in using real players for points of reference, so you know the new names are youngsters whilst Theo Walcott is the grandad of the team.

However there's still some quirk to this game.

Sergio Aguero, for example. The year has just ticked over to 2026 and the guy came 2nd in the World Player of the year award, racking up 25 goals in 45 games with an average rating of 7.76 (0.4 ahead of the guy who came in first) and all of this at 37.

The guy is insane, 8 years after most strikers are past it, he is still one of the best players in the game. He's scored 408 in 758 (all for Atletico) and still isn't retiring at the end of the season.

I love him.

In a nutshell gents is this game worth playing or not?

I'm mad to get stuck into a manager game but I'm really not sure and having been keeping upto date with what to avoid.

Or

What should I play?

Depends, Dundons.

The game has particular longevity with me because I like watching young boys blossom through manhood to become world beaters, before wilting away into nothingness, making me feel like an immortal monster.

But yeah, it's difficult to say. I'd recommend trying the demo but FM is all about the cumulative experience you get year after year, the quirks that your game throws up that is unique to you.

It's proably got everything you'd need from a managerial game.

edit: that young boys bit went onto a new line (at least on my screen) at just the perfect time there.
