Hitman: Absolution

The main villain in Hitman: Absolution is Blake Dexter, played by Cowboys & Aliens star Keith Carradine.

Agent 47's handler is Diana Burnwood, played by White Collar's Marsha Thomason. Diana is said to have a "close relationship" with Agent 47, Hollywood Reporter revealed.

"Diana is 47's only true human contact," Thomason said. "They've known each other an extremely long time, and in the Hitman world, she is what Q is to James Bond. So she sets the assignments, tells him where to go and who to kill."

"The character I play in Hitman: Absolution is as multidimensional as any well-imagined character should be," Carradine said.

"The vividness of the world entered by the gamer hinges on detail. To fully engage the attention of the player requires nothing less than the most completely realized universe of geography and personality."

Developer IO is working with a dozen Hollywood actors for the hotly-anticipated game, due out next year.

Actors are required to provide performance capture and voice over work, conducted in Giant Studios, which James Cameron used for blockbuster movie Avatar.

IO has captured "complex scenes" with up to seven actors on set at once. Absolution focuses on the emotional stories that evolve, director Tore Blystad said.

"We had actors like Marsha and Keith come in and do full-body acting with facial and voice being captured simultaneously in scenes.

"Some of these scenes were very complex with all kinds of props and interactions amongst the actors."

PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 game Absolution was announced two days ago with a brief teaser trailer, below.

Agent 47 takes on "his most dangerous contract to date", publisher Square Enix said. "Betrayed by those he trusted and hunted by the police, he finds himself at the centre of a dark conspiracy and must embark on a personal journey through a corrupt and twisted world, in his search for the truth."

Absolution has been built "from the ground up" by IO using its new proprietary Glacier 2 technology.

Blystad described it as "more stylised, more serious, and darker this time around in both the story line and the visuals".

Agent 47 goes on different missions throughout the US, with part of the game taking place in Chicago.

A new Hitman movie launches next year to coincide with the game. Daniel Casey (Jimmy Six) has written the script. The film is said to have an original story and characters, "but will retain the look and feel of the new game".

"The hope is that the movie will be going in a similar direction, and then when they both come out they will speak the same language. They won't follow the old Hitman games, but rather go with this newer direction."

I hope IO haven't butchered the Hitman series with a turkey aimed at the less patient button mashing gamers.

What's the betting they go for a more Bourne style rather than using disguises and stealth.

Hope not. I found the bourne films a) shite & b) boring.

I also hope they don't go all action oriented either. Hitman was one of the few games where I actually enjoyed the stealth.

I hope they make make the new game all action but I don't think so. From the teaser, there's a huge emphasis on the SILENCER as 47 is attaching it. That shows you stealth, efficiency and planning. Well I hope so anyway.

Also, they need to keep the REPLAY VALUE high like in the previous games by allowing more ways to kill your targets.

As a Hitman Purist, I'm sure I'm going to hate the new voice artist, granted, a ridiculous quibble but I've played them all since the early days and David Bateson is Agent 47.

This is definately going on my wish list.

A brilliant series of games which I spent many hours on, usually working out each level over so many failed attempts before trying it ''one last time'' with maximum stealth. Finally, as has been said before, resorting to just shooting everyone who looks my way.

I remember on one level, not sure which game it was though. You had to get into a sky-scraper type building and take out your target and an option was to trigger the fire alarm and disguise yourself as one of the fire crew.

During this level I ended up in a small control room with two workers who kept glancing my way, I think I had raised their suspicion slightly but I needed complete some objective in there but they kept catching me.

Killing the pair of them also caused me problems as by the time I had shot one of them the other either ran off or the kill goth messy taking about four bullets as they scarpered, but in what I always remember as my finest gaming moment, I aligned the crosshairs with one guy and waited until they both looked away.

I then quickly drew and gave him one shot to the head then just as the other guy began to turn his head back my way I had altered my aim and took him out with one bullet too.

The sense of acheivement from neither of them seeing it coming was on par with scoring a vital goal in PES i think. Partly due to the length of the level and there not being checkpoints if I remember correctly.

Sorry about the waffle there, got a bit carried away knowing there is a new one due.

Your waffle is understood and acceptable. This has to be one of the most anticipated and overdue sequels of all time.

I for one will be getting in on release day (assuming they don't totally fuck it up by turning it into an action shooter...)

I will be buying whatever superfluous special editions they release. I played Hitman Contracts and Blood Money to death. That's almost a pun.

David was confirmed as 47 for the next game if I'm not mistaken. At least on Hitman forum it said so.

I always make a point not to pay £40 for a game. This usually means I am playing big titles months after release apart from the P.E.S. games, which I either get at midnight or on the way to work the morning after.

This one is definately being picked up on release day.

Same here, but after 5+ years its understandable! I hope it delivers the goods and any follow up is released a lot sooner.

I'd agree with your point on the voiceover. I didn't know who voiced him but the tone and accent made the character recognizable and to change it, along with whatever else they alter could detract from what should be a truly great game.

Hell, I think I'm gonna take my Black Ops back next week as it's nowhere near as good as W.A.W. and see what deal they have on Blood Money now.

I thought they were using the actor from the forthcoming Hitman sequel?

This was never made offocial and I believe I didn't see it anywhere. But as I said, David is suppose to be 47 in the next game. It said so on Hitman forum.com

Details on game mechanics:
- 47 is more agile and easier to control, for example he can grab on ledges and balance around edges
- Cover system integrated, human shields
- Hiding in dark corners
- Still possible to kill target only, optimally by accident
- Film-noir flair
- Dynamic music
- Using the environmental objects to dispatch enemies; examples: strangulation with electrical cords, the good old chandelier, a Bong (!)
- Glacier-2 engine again using a crowd system with dozens, if not hundreds of people on screen
- Detailed graphics, fantastic lighting, fluid indoor/outdoor transitions
