I have a terrible confession to make... I bought Fifa at the weekend. I've been playing Pro Evo since it was ISS and have always flamed people who played Fifa. I bought a copy of 08 a couple months ago on Ebay and played it for a week or two but came to the expected conclusion that it just didn't have the responsiveness or heart of Pro Evo.

After playing the Fifa 09 demo (and changing all the controller settings) I was impressed. Obviously I needed to see what the Pro demo was like and I've got to say that for the first time I was totally underwhelmed. I can't put my finger on what it is, maybe my criteria has changed? Maybe I've been influenced by the positive Fifa reviews? Hell, I'll even admit to possibly being sucked in by the shiny graphics and licensing. But the pro demo just didn't excite me the way that it has done in years gone by.

I think ultimately its been summed up by a couple of reviewers in that Fifa is now the more accurate representation of the game and Pro is the more accessible 'pick up and play' version where traditionally it was the other way around.

The last thing I want to do is to start an arguement about which is better, I've read so many of them on this and other web sites over the years, I just thought I'd give my opinion. Because when all is said and done and even though I'm happy with my decision, I feel guilty that I've switched allegiances.

I sincerely hope that Pro gets its mojo back in future iterations but right now it seems that while we have always laughed at Fifa and their fans for all their tweaks, changes and gimmicks surely this is the point of evolution? To continue to try and improve what they've got until they reach 'perfection' for want of a better word? And who can honestly say that Pro has done this? Evolution has been the buzz word every time October rolls around for Pro fans but from what I can see nothing much has changed. The graphics get better, the game modes basically stay the same and the gameplay seems to either get slower or faster depending on the feedback/criticism from the previous year.

I hope the shift in power swings back but right now Fifa (in my humble opinion) is the superior game.

Are you being fucking serious?

I'm sorry i had to read this over twice just to be sure it said what it said? First i'd like to see these reviews, because who ever has said this is seriously deluded. And also yourself more so for believing it, and getting sucked in by the hype.

I totally disagree. I do admit that FIFA has improved 100% in the last couple of years and the 09 demo was indeed very good and worth buying. But after playing the PES09 demo I just thing the gameplay and feel of the game is always far betetr than FIFA. You can play it and you instantly know its a PES game. I played teh FIFA demo and won like 4-0 I played teh PES demo and took 3 games to score which is why I love PES cus its harder and you get more satisfaction from scoreing cus you have to work for it. FIFA does it all for you.

Fair comment, like I said maybe I have been sucked in. The review that I can remember that said that was PSM3, and to be fair to them they said both games were great it just depends on what style you prefer.

Pro evo in the demo just felt a bit wooden. I can't put my finger on it, and I know that each year the game feels different and you have to get used to it but in previous years I wanted to keep going, wanted to beat it. I don't get the same feeling this year.

So funny! somebody admits they enjoy FIFA and they become a fanboy! idiot!

I agree, FIFA seems the better game. I will still be getting Pro evo as well though as the demo looked pritty good.

Whether you believe me or not is up to you but I'm no Fifa fan boy, you obviously didn't read my post properly.

And lets face it, fan boy or not my decision to purchase a video game does not dictate whether or not I know what 'true football' is about.

Yeah, but neither does PES, not anymore, neither game does. Many REAL games are boring as hell with very little goal mouth action, both games try to play fantasy football, the way we all imagine it but football in reality is nothing like it. For example, when your coach tells you to elbow another player off the ball but make it look accidental... is that in PES or Fifa??

In all honesty the reason I prefer PES is because I'm a constant editor and like to update my games in as many ways possible, oh and I feel more satisfaction when I score in PES a lot of the goals I score in Fifa look EXACTLY the same, that's never happened in PES.

Chillax peons.

Neither game is perfect and people are entitled to their views which don't deserve to be criticised uso long as they aren't making ridiculous, factless statements.

Good point. And with regards the goals and the way that they are scored so far I haven't experienced it with this version of Fifa but you're right in that it would ruin the game if it became repetitive and honestly this was my main concern with getting Fifa. In Pro evo you could score goals that could just never happen in Fifa, real goals where it hits the post, gets pin balled around the six yard box then scuffs in off the back of someone head. Well thats changed now and it the addition of ball physics like that this time round that improves the game.

It wasn#t a fair comment mate...

Your original post was spot on.....whilst it is individual preference which footie title they prefer only the blind will argue against what u said.

FIFA now aims to be an accurate simulation. PES is a fast paced simplistic arcade game.

PES 2009 is still the goal mouth excitement king. For all the praise I heap upon FIFA09, the goal mouth attacking element of the game feels a bit watered down when compared to ProEvo.
