My Holy Roman Empire campaign is going incredibly well at the minute, own all of Europe almost except lower Spain, Ireland and northern Scotland, and Scandinavia. The Pope paid for his constant cuntery.

Might install this later on, I should give the Danes their due for fucking me over last time and stay away from the Timurids and Genghis Khan.

French being cunts... no surprises. Before I have room to breathe the French attack me, then while I'm dealing with them the Scottish attack, a fully Mel Gibson-ised affair where they're actually more than a mild nuisance. Pissed off, I was the richest faction and this bloody war has drained me of all my wealth... fighting on two fronts is just too much, ask Hitler.

Just to allay any fears, I have no rectified this problem by annihilating both the Scottish and the French, along with most of the Milanese for good measure. I rule the best part of the west while old Genghis is running amok in the east.

One question though, how come I can only select from five playable factions at the beginning of my campaign?

You have to defeat the rest to unlock them.

Or, you could just go in the files like I did and get them playable. I'll post up a mini-guide later, its easy as fuck.

I don't remember having to do that on the original? Fair enough with some, but five primary options feels a little low.

You did have to do MAJOR, MINOR on Medieval.

1) Go into the Medieval II - Total War folder
2) Go into 'data'
3) Go into 'World'
4) Go into 'Maps'
5) Go into 'Campaign'
6) Go into 'imperial_campaign'
7) Right-click on 'descr_strat', go to properties, and untick the 'read-only' box. Click 'ok'.
8) Open 'descr_strat'. Near the top you will see a faction list. Paste over it with this:

playable
england
france
hre
spain
venice
sicily
milan
scotland
byzantium
russia
moors
turks
egypt
denmark
portugal
poland
hungary
end
unlockable
end
nonplayable
papal_states
aztecs
mongols
timurids
slave
end

(Make sure you keep the tabs, it won't let me do it here)

9) Save and close the document.

Load up the game and you should be able to play as the rest. But I wouldn't do the other nonplayable factions like Mongols because they can fuck up the game, especially since most aren't there at the start.
