BELIEVE

Release date: 23/01/09 (PS3, Xbox 360)

Game info: "It's been 5 long years since your "mysterious" disappearance from the skate scene, and in your absence things most definitely have changed. A mega-corporation has changed the face of city - now it's up to you to fight back and help re-build the skate scene in New San Vanelona."

Key features:

  • Double the tricks - Inverts, one-foots, hippy jumps, finger flips, the list goes on...

  • New San Vanelona - A new look and feel to the city... time to make New San Van a skater's paradise.

  • Moveable objects and off-board - Put the two of them together, create your own spots, and you've got sick new game play.

  • Hall of Meat - Broken bones anyone?

  • New and improved skate.Reel - It's back and better than ever.

  • Deeper Create-A-Skater - Make your skater truly your own.

The freedom was astonishing in skate, not particularly due to the free-roaming as that has been around for years, but solely because of the entire movement used through the analog sticks. It was nothing short of genius in all honesty, and I'll certainly be buying skate 2, anyone else contemplating buying it ?

hmmm not impressed by the graphics, they don't appear to have improved, but in terms of everything else, skate is brilliant.

Never been on Skate, may rent this if it gets good reviews. I'm not really into skateboards but it could change my mind. We'll see.

I was impressed by the idea of the first one, yet I couldn't get the hang of the controls, and much preffered Tony Hawk's. I highly doubt that I'd be able to get the hang of this one.

The first one was great, this franchise shits all over tony hawks and his button bashing-ness

Skate was actually a challenging game...So am very excited for this!

Played the demo earlier. I thought it was decent, couldn't really get into it. Doubt I'll be buying it when it first comes out but I might pick it up when the prices go down a bit.

I'm yet to play the demo, but I'll be downloading it tonight, can't wait either to be honest. If it is anything like the first Skate game then it will no doubt be epic. It was just so rewarding actually performing the tricks yourself, it solely relied on your ability to perform the movements with your thumbs as opposed to the usual button-bashing we've been accustomed to.

I'm opposite Rossy I love it, Skate2 >> any Tony Hawk game ever made.

True. control system was the big thing that did it. More intuative.

Will be interesting to see what the online experience is this time. Skate's was shite. Very limited and buggy as hell. Worse than PES...

Woah woah woah, hold your horses there Chico.

Skate wasn't that bad online to be honest, I always used to go online with my friend and we'd never experienced lag. I played a few games of "S.K.A.T.E." I think it was too, and never had lag or bugs either. I of course could have just been playing different game modes to you like.

Worse than PES online though ? PES doesn't actually work online whatsoever, it shouldn't even be classed as an online game.

I used the free skate option mainly. Area's were small, collision detection was vague and the random pop-up of other skaters particularly distracting. To me this all equates to a poor experience. Offline, once you got used to the camera angle, the game was awesome. I completed it on PS3 and traded it in, yet have recently picked up a pre-owned copy to get back into the swing of it prior to the release of the sequel. I would still say it’s one of the best ‘sports’ games I’ve played on any format (after SWOS on Amiga…).

Maybe the PS3 version online wasn't as good as the 360's ? Only thing I can think of.

Can't wait to play the demo though now, from what I hear it only lasts 5 minutes which is a bit of a bummer, still, should be fun.

Valid point. 360 online is more stable across the board. Haven't tried it for 360 though, it's a pad thing. For some reason I just can't handle sports games on the Xbox pad.

As for the demo only being 5 mins! What the hell is that all about? It'll take longer than that to download. Not sure I'll bother for that...

That's just what I've heard, but it's supposed to be a beginning/preview of the career mode. You have to visit professional skaters and learn how to do tricks from them, and you can also customise your character and his clothing from what I've heard. All in all, sounds like more than 5 minutes. Maybe it's from the point you actually start skating by yourself after the customisation and tutorials that it's 5 minutes, seems more feasible.

Still, 5 minutes is hardly enough time to make a valued judgement. Even with several plays, you'll have no idea of the nuances and limitations.
