Skyrim

I know at least Dale is fagging out on this, I just picked it up today and I enjoyed my opening hour of play, is any one else playing/planning on getting this?

Not done much so far, discovered a mine that was being used as a base by bandits and was my first real experience of combat, started with a dual wield of a pyro spell in my left hand and a mace in my right but realised a shield and weapon combo is much better for a beginner like me.

Feels very much life Fallout but in a fantasy world, so I'm liking just walking round and exploring. Not too sure about the UI for levelling up though, all a bit clunky imo.

Highlight so far was seeing a deer gracefully drinking some water and I was just admiring the world only to see it brutally attacked by a pack of wolves who then turned on me. Fortunately I dealt with them.

Got this on PC (as I feel its better suited for PC with quick keys and what not). Im about 8.5hrs in and only level 9 but absolutely loving it. The game itself isn't perfect (leveling up of enemies is a bit strange and bigger enemies become real difficult!!).

The highlight for me so far was my companion and I were taking down a troll by the side of a river. I was using a bow and went to fire the killing shot but as I let go of the arrow my companion stabbed the troll from behind. The troll fell down causing my arrow to hit my companion. She groaned then fell to the floor so I went to see what happened and found my arrow stuck in her throat. Was hilarious at the time...I quickly pulled out my arrow and carried on walking lol.

I'm looking forward to stuff like that, when do you get access to a safe house, i've been looting a lot and pretty close to being over encumbered.

Jonno you have to buy a house (about 5000) in a city that likes you. I usually sell all my shit.

Barn - yes you can swim.

If it's like Fallout then you can swim, i slipped into a river and was dragged down a waterfall but was ok in the water afterwards and it was quite deep so I assume it was more than just wading.

Oh this game. This fucking game.

I'm level 10 I think, and as Jonno said I have been fagging out majorly on this game. I'm the Jarl of White...something and that means I can buy a safe house but i'm yet to discover where it actually is.

The fight with the first dragon you encounter is epic. I spent 5 minutes shitting a brick in the watch tower thing, before finally venturing outside to take a look at all the guards shooting it with arrows. Decided to wait a bit before chargin it head on and swinging for the life of me.

I, like Jonno, am going for the sword and shield combo. I like playing to steroetypes so i'm imperial and have an epic beard to boot. Next game i'm going to creat a staff and sword gandalf type character. That's if I ever get anywhere in this story. I could quite happily walk around and watch things happen, it really is that good.

I love the levelling up screens though. More about perks and less about what type of character your guy is, which fits in with their whole making this game accessible to the masses, without taking too much away.

What I don't like however is not being able to see my guy in the inventory screen. It's not been that much of a problem obviously, but I just like to admire my character in all his pimped out gear every once in a while.

Oh man. There's nothing more scary than hearing a dragon roaaar and your looking round in the skys for ages trying to find it and then it drops out of nowhere! Fucking insane!

Just saw this on another forum of a low level guy taking on a giant and I thought i'd share it as I lol'd

 Fucked.

My first encounter with a giant I was lucky because it was attacking a farm thus focussing his efforts on other people rather than me.

My first encounter with a troll was much, much harder. Damn thing kept regenerating its health. Something I learned after reading the book that tells you how to kill trolls

Would a Giant only attack you if you attacked first? I saw one video where the player could talk to him but decided to attack him and a mammoth was next to him for some reason.

This game sounds amazing.

That sounds like an NPC encounter to be honest, no idea though. All the giants i've seen are wild.

Barn this is absolutely nothing mate, this is about a mile off the tip of the iceberg.

The forging and the tanning is where I was left stunned. You can tan hides that you collect off animals, turn it into leather (with which you can make leather straps, which is needed for hide and leather armour) at the tanning station, then make the actual armour on the forge, and then improve it on the workbench. It's an incredible process man. And with metal armour, you have to find the ore, put it into the Smelter, make Ingots, take them to the forge to make the armour, of which you can also improve on the workbench  It really is incredible. The same process applies to weapons, but instead of the workbench, there is a grinding stone to improve the weapons!

When I was introduced to all this, I really was stunned man. It's a far cry from the repair hammers in Oblivion!

And don't get me started on the cooking. I think I spent around half an hour making vegetable soup

Regarding mounts; can you ride anything save horses? I just had some hilarious visions in riding mammoths which would no doubt end in my destruction in some form

See, stuff like that is what I never touched on in the fallout games and I doubt i'll do it in this game unless it is actually required. In fallout your weapons get weaker and damaged through use so i'm used to repairing them, does the same apply in skyrim, if so I may actually have to look into the process.

Nothing beats walking round a mountain in the dark at night and a snow storm hitting. Hearing teh cries of a pack of wolves close by you find shelter in an abandoned tower only to discover bandits sitting round a fire keeping warm who don't take kindly to you seeking refuge in their den. This thing wasn't even marked on the map as a discovery so it's just a random building that isn't even important.

Love it.

edit - nope weapons and armour does not deteriorate through use (a bit unrealistic but whatever) so unless there is some great weapons and armour only available through forging I won't be touching on it. Dale, where can you cook?

Can you make fires to warn them off mate?

You cook at the cooking pots mate, theres practically one in every building.

The point is immersion Jonno, plus the armour i've made myself and enchanted myself (oh yes, you can enchant things, AND it's easy this time :D) seems to be of better quality. Also, when you enchant things you can rename them. Should lead to the "Greatsword of epic girth" when I finally make the switch to two handed weapons.

ALSO HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT.

I just discovered you can mine.

This fucking game. :nath:

Ali

It is happening again
I'll probably get this after Christmas. Sounds like theres a lot of bugs that need fixing.

Picture the scene, I have just spent an hour exploring an old crypt to retrieve an artifact for the Companions who I am looking to join. After making my way through countless undead and Silver Hands I emerge from it successful but exhausted.

The hour is late and it is raining, darkness surrounds me. I pull out my torch and in the distance I see smoke and the light of a camp fire just past a large rock formation. I head towards it to see if there are any fellow adventurers sharing tall tails who can offer me a respite from the death and murder.

I head onwards in hope of finding a place to rest but the camp fire seems to be getting bigger and bigger as I approach. It is only then that I notice one of the huge rocks is moving!! As it turns round I realise these are Mammoths!!

I gaze upon them from a distance in awe of their size and I creep closer trying to get a better look. Slowly, slowly....suddenly i'm spotted. The Mammoth doesn't like my presence and it charges right at me. I avoid it but it's fellow beasts are now aware. Then I see the shapes in front of the fire. 3 giants awake looking to protect their herd. There is no escape.......

Yes my first encounter with giants did not end well. I stood my ground and went out fighting.
