PacMan, certain programs don't support 4GB of RAM..for some reason. My Sound Blaster XFi card didn't work until I booted up using only 3GB in Vista x64 (via MSConfig), installed the appropriate drivers and fixes and then set it back to 4GB. Because 3000 isn't 3GB, 3072 is.

When it goes black can you use ALT-TAB to switch out of it? Also, have you checked the Event Viewer (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools) to see if it is noticing any sort of error?
