Yeah armour is sooo important, without it you do tend to get pummelled by everything....except bloatflys,...i dont know why these are in the game, theyre wank....

make sure you repair your weapons regularly aswell, nothing worse than a weapon that breaks on you when your fighting 4 supermutants at once :ninja:

and the most important fact of the game = Always carry plenty of stimpaks

Am I the only one who finds this gaem quite difficult? Normally I'm OK with games but on this my health is abysmal and I'm a level 4 or 5 and Mutants always destroy me. Is it just a case of levelling up and finding better armour?

I levelled up my repair skills fairly quickly, helps to maintain good quality gear. I favour the merc armour as it's a nice balance between weight & protection. Super Mutants can be a bitch, but a well maintained automatic rifle or better yet combat shotgun usually dispenses with them well enough. If you can get some early damage (via vats, before they spot you) it'll help.

If you find you are still struggling, take a couple of thousand caps to Underworld. Go to the barman & ask about his guard... a little help in the outside world can go a long way...

most important fact of the game = Always carry plenty of stimpaks

Too true, mate! Either that or loads of food followed by a good dose of rad-away

I stopped into Tesco on the way home yesterday and couldn't resist any longer, so £37.79 left the wallet and Fallout 3 entered my possession. It'll probably pop up somewhere for £30 come next week! But it had to be done.

I made a start on the game last night. I spent absolutely ages deciding how best to distribute my starting statistics (for how I'd like to play the game), as I'm new to the Fallout series. I took a little time to read up on a few guides, and threads, in relation to character creation so to get a heads up and avoid making a completely duff character! But once I got into the game (albeit saving once I exited the Vault and entered Megaton) I had a blast. I can't wait to fire it up later.

I had a few problems with the G.O.A.T. test. But I had heard about that so saved just beforehand, and loaded until I got it to work, as opposed to simply skipping it (at least not first time through). Other than that it was all good.

These are my stats:

Strength: 2
Perception: 7
Endurance: 6
Charisma: 5
Intelligence: 8
Agility: 7
Luck: 5

I don't plan on melee combat unless it's an absolute last resort, so that is why I skimped on strength. I went with Perception for Lockpick, and swifter threat indications on the radar. Maybe I could've taken another point out of Endurance, but considering it's my first time through I figured a little extra HP and Environmental Resistances wouldn't go a miss. I left Charisma dead centre as I'd like an easier time with bartering, and more speech options to open up in conversations. I wish I'd taken one point from Charisma and put it into Agility, though, as I plan on making Small Guns my main choice of weapons, and extra A.P. points, along with improved Sneak ain't exactly a bad thing. Damn! I pumped Intelligence for Repair, Medicine, and Skill Points. I wasn't really sure about Luck, so, I left it where it was.

Hopefully they're not the worst stats of all time! Although I hear that the game can be completed with almost any character build.

Strength also governs how much you can carry. Putting it to 2 means you'll be light on ammo and variations of weapons.

Hmm. I think I may still have the game saved before I leave the Vault (where you can edit your character). Seeing as I haven't yet done much since entering Megaton, other than talk to a lot of people, I may load it up and edit my stats a little. I can pull a few points out of Charisma, maybe one out of Endurance, too.

*Edit*
I've been toying with the numbers, and I think I may alter my initial stats to read as such:

S - 5
P - 6
E - 5
C - 2
I - 8
A - 7
L - 7 (7% Critical Chance & All Skills +4)

Although I could leave Luck at 5 (5% Critical Chance & All Skills +3) and bolster Perception, and Agility, by a point a piece.

G.O.A.T. test is irrelevant! You can speak to the examiner after the test & get it changed...

True. You can easily build your stats as you go through. Like I said a few posts ago, I'd recommend levelling up your repair ability as soon as poss. Average shot with a fully repaired weapon beats crack-shot with a broken wreck!

Strength also governs how much you can carry. Putting it to 2 means you'll be light on ammo and variations of weapons.

Weapons yes, most ammo has no weight rating so you can carry as much as you can find.

I'm level 4 now. I've just cleaned out the Super-Duper Mart of anything that may come in useful in future, it's all stored in my house (in Megaton). It took a few trips back and forth (quick travel) but I'm sure it'll be time well spent. Let's see how long it is before I max out my inventory, again!

Lockpick: 30
Medicine: 40
Repair: 48
Science: 30
Small Guns: 51 (+) What does the (+) mean?
Sneak: 40

They're my big hitters (relative to my level) at this stage.

For Perks, thus far, I have choosen:

2 - Gun Nut
3 - Gun Nut
4 - Educated

And I've got the next two in mind for:

5 - Intense Training ~ Intelligence
6 - Comprehension

I'm hoping to get the Intelligence Bobblehead before I reach level 5. I've got a handful of weapons now, decent armor, and a load of Stimpaks, so if I run into any trouble (I'll be looking to sneak and avoid) I should be able hold my own.

Anyone got Dogmeat? I'm considering getting him, but, I'm not sure I like the idea of having to use valuable Stimpaks on the pooch should he become injured. And I hear he attacks of his own free will, charging on in, which defeats the purpose of attempting to remain hidden.

**EDIT**

Just for the sake of interest. Which colour is everyones preferred choice for HUD and Pip-Boy? I have the Pip-Boy on Green, and the HUD on Amber. Blue is sound, too, though.

How do I play this game? How do I follow my objectives? How to I keep track of my objectives? How to I know what objectives I'm doing? How do I know where to go?

I'm in the wasteland with the huge bomb in the middle of the city, and some dude who has spoken with 'dad' (from the game) is asking for 300 capps. He is the owner of a hotel.

Honestly, I haven't bothered yet. You can send him back to wait at the vault, but that defeats the object of having him find you ammo etc. I'll probably look for him at some point...

HUD & PIP both Green. Couldn't be bothered changing as I just wanted to start the game!

All objectives can bee seen via your PIP boy.

The guy actually you refer to is an asshole. The info he provides is not completely necessary.

Spoiler (about the guy Viperized was referring to) :

He has a terminal in his "office" - turn it on and the password if, any, is pretty easy to figure out. You'll get the info about 'Dad' there.

Or if memory serves (as it was quite some time ago...) you can get his password by picking his safe.

I got the Intelligence Bobblehead! And I'm just about to hit level 5. I swam pretty much all of the way after catching sight of a Super Mutant! I talked to some dude (well he started the conversation) about an Android mission, before legging it out of there without taking to anyone else. I didn't wanna risk jumping the main quest forward at all.

I am doing the quest "Them!" against those big ass fire ants, but they're eating up a hella amount of my ammo. And I don't want to take the Entomology (50% damage increase against Giant Ants, Radscorpions, etc) perk before level 7, maybe level 6 if I put Comprehension back a step. I dunno how many insects are in the world, but 50% extra damage is massive, and will save my ammo for bigger fish like Super Mutants!

I've actually planned out my perks right up to level 20. And I have a spot for either Entomology, or Fortune Finder.

I was thinking of that. I could keep sending him off to find ammo, but it'd blow my cover if he returned at the wrong moment with a few enemies trailing him. If it doesn't work out he'll have a permanent home at Vault 101.

Aye. I started with both green, too, then messed with them later on. I don't like the Pip-Boy on anything other than green. But the HUD works well with most, I find.

Dogmeat was a pain in the ass. He's dead now. He got killed by some robots in the old robot factory. Luckily I didn't get too attached to him. I said my goodbyes and legged it out of the factory as I didn't want to deal with 10+ robots.

I just started continuing the main quest after about 10 hours doing random side quests, mostly the survival guide. I think I'm going to finish off the last bit (History of Rivet City iIrc) and then I'm going to blow the place to pieces. Although I'm still not certain..
Storming Galaxy News Radio, with the Brotherhood was awesome too.

He can die while looking for ammo I believe, so I'm not really sure what use he is. At least the mutt on Fable is impervious to harm... there's a spoiler so I'll shut up now!

The Brotherhood kick supermutant arse with ease. I had 2 of the mutant fuckers following me in DC, so I lead them towards the radio tower & the Brotherhood dudes aced them in about 5 seconds!

There are wandering Brotherhood renegades as well, these guys are pretty well tooled and handy to stick near if your headed in the same direction.

Two days after I purchased a copy of Fallout 3, for £37 from Tesco, it is reduced to £25 - £27 in Game, and Zavvi or HMV. And now deals are popping up left, right, and centre! It's down to £30 on Play, too. If only I had waited a little longer!

I was going to return it, with one imaginary naff reason or another, but I've been feeling under the weather lately and haven't went over the doorstep. It can serve as a reminder to either buy a game on release, or see out the wait (in its entirety) for a price reduction!

I was two days away from saving a tidy £10. :(

BELIEVE
Or about a week away from saving an even tidier £20 as it has been permanently priced as £19.57 at Gamestation and Amazon.

Just let me dad know, so I can't wait for Christmas now, shall be a superb game.

I finally got around to making the trip to the Junkyard, and the subsequent find of Dogmeat. I gunned the Raiders down, of course, and now have Dogmeat as my loyal canine companion. I've had two encounters already, though, where I've not only been forced into combat before I'd have wished, but where I've also had to surrender good cover because Dogmeat (who is in the middle of a crowd) is being shot/hacked to pieces, and if I had not closed the distance (to get a better shot and end it quicker) he'd of been in pet heaven. It's the complete opposite of my playing preference, so I'm going to leave Dogmeat at Vault 101, or my house in Megaton.

Vault 101 is the designated area for Dogmeat to be sent to wait, so one would assume it is best. But I'm thinking my house in Megaton would be much better, and safer, as well as it being somewhere I'd visit (to drop off weapons, armor, etc) on my travels quite regularly. Anyone know of any reason why one area would be any worse than the other?

I'll no doubt create another character at some stage, with a completely different gameplan which Dogmeat would compliment far more. But this time around it's just not feesable to have him accompany me.

My current quest is getting Moira a mine, from Minefield. And then it'll be back to wrap up that "THOSE!" quest. Damn Fire Ants!
