this is unusual for me though, because ive heard stories of 360's breaking like ALL the time, but this is actually the first time ive heard of that a PS3 has died :erm:

Hello, finally going to purchase the PS3 80g I am so behind the times with this, I remember the previous 2 Play-stations were a simple case of sticking in a disc and away you go, having read about these bloody updates has got me annoyed to say the least. Are these updating an absolute necessity? Also I am guessing all you need is a router and a PS3 to go online nothing else is required to play online, is that right or do you have to download a package to play online?

The updates are a must if you want to go on-line, I've personally only had problems with one update that made my videos black and white but they brought out another to rectify this. You'll probably have to update once every 2 months but some updates you'll notice no difference. They do them to make your PS3 experience better, although they end up fucking them up in some cases.
Yup getting on-line is a doddle. Just stick in the cable from your PS3 to your router and the network settings are explained on-screen. You shouldn't have a real problem.

ON topic, if your wireless is not good enough, is the only way of connecting to the internet plugging a wire into a router? A friend said you could plug one into a laptop if that's connected to the internet. No idea if that's true.

You can plug an ethernet cable into your modem and send that to the PS3 to go with the wired connection.
