Mods > DLC :>

Sucks to be playing this on a PS3 for those that are given the general flow of problems since release though.

A valid and thoroughly annoying point. There has to be a solution to the modding issue for consoles. While, and I refer here to my personal 360 experience, I enjoy the ease of use and lack of updating hardware every five minutes to be able to play new titles, I do miss the mods available in the world of the PC gamer.

Surely it's something dev's can look at?

I do pity the PS3 users. While I still own a PS3, I very rarely use it for these kind of open world games due to some major glitches that don't seem anywhere near as prevalent on the 360.

Well its something Valve might tackle if they truly are working on a console as it'll undoubtedly tie into Steam which has Steamworks where, in the case of Skyrim, content is shared.

I'm not sure if the problem is the management of such mods: how, on a console, would they propose to easily change load order and uninstall unwanted mods? How easy would it be to manage clashes between different mods? These probably aren't insurmountable problems by any stretch but then does it come down to the user type?

Given that mod creation tools lend themselves to PC far more than console due to memory requirements and the mouse-keyboard scenario, would there be a lack of console users willing to spend the ridiculous hours PC players are spending on creating these mods? Is the programming architecture so very different between platforms that cross-platform mods are a no-no?

Of course, this would all also mean that all three versions of Skyrim, for example, be updated on the same day which, with Microsoft and Sony so particular about updates and their procedures, is very difficult to achieve.

Some good points. Not sure the system restrictions are such a hurdle though. The 360 is supposedly easy to port to from PC, plus the added advantage that every 360 is the same, you would imagine therefore that it would be easier to develop and align mods on a one spec format than for the PC brigade?

The install/uninstall should work akin to DLC one would assume. Again, nothing new here. The original dev would only have to make their software capable of allowing this as obviously console users don't have the same access to the data that PC users do.

You do point out a major flaw with the software updates though. Can anyone really see Sony and Microsoft agreeing to help each other to aid gamers worldwide?

Finally, cross platform isn't an issue for me. As long as one does it then bugger the rest :)

Isn't this a major problem though?

Modders would need to create their own programs to install their mods. If they do that, you open up the consoles to game-breaking/system-breaking issues if someone does something wrong, be it accidentally or on purpose.

If they don't have to include their own installer (some do on PC anyway), then a community would need to create a mod manager of which there are around three for PC. What's the extraction rate of massive compressed volumes on a console? It just seems that all this fiddly business is more at home with PC gamers who, generally speaking, are more that way inclined.

Perhaps it is easier than I'm making it out to be but I'm sure Sony or Microsoft would at some stage blame bad modders for causing hardware failures in some twisted way.

And to think I though I was the cynical one :D

The install software could be engineered by the console provider. A big step perhaps, but surely one that must be looked at at some juncture?

Do agree with your 'modders' blamed stance. Too easy a target, unless they take the old Sega route and vet everything...

Ahh, I remember the days of social ineptitude. I am still grateful to this day for opening my curtains back in the 90's :/

Let me say, I play Skyrim on the PS3 and haven't had any major problems yet, that aren't due to my incredible lack of skill.

The weapon you get at the end of that quest can be a life saver sometimes!

Also, one of my followers (Lydia) appears to be stuck. She's in one of the castles (Broken Tower Redoubt or something). She's in a position where she can freely move, but choses not to. I even unfolowed here with the hope that she'll go back to my house, but no luck there either.

I know.

It's not majorly important I suppose, though I think she has some gear I want. I had become a bit attached to her even though she was a bit crap. I was even thinking about popping the question, but I think idea has gone down the shitter! :crymore:

I played Skyrim on ps3 (best 2011 game along with Dark Souls, which I have on the 360) and I didn't get these "glitches" that everyone is claiming to be on ps3 that aren't prevalent in the 360. Keep in mind that my ps3 has frame rate issues and I have to replace it because at this point, it's unplayable. :( But I still don't get some of the things that were said to happen on ps3.

Not everyone will. I remember on Oblivion that I had only a couple or minor problems compared to most. The only potential gamebreaker was the end of the Grey Fox storyline where my character froze in castle & wouldn't move, it happened for every re-load too. Eventually sorted it with a full reinstall.

Still, never had any real issues on 360... guess I'm biased now on open world stuff, sticking to 360.

Don't worry, she's fine now and is resting safely at my Breezehome. Just left her standing there in the castle for a few days so she could get her head straight.

Yes but vampires work in a world like this and feature in previous games of the series. It isn't as if they're reacting to Twilight.

I'm unsure to be honest. Surely you just mentioning Twilight means that subconsciously, you know that this is a cash in on how popular the vampire thing has gotten??

Of all the new areas they could have opened and explored, all the lore that they have at their disposal, all the things that are hinted on in the game (especially the Falmer thing) and they go with vampires, which is coincidentally, one of the most popular 'things' around at the moment? Hmmmm.

I don't suspect there's many people who are fans of both Twilight and Skyrim though.....

I really don't see it as a problem.
