I was happy to find a post on GT5 here although not happy with some of the negative comments because I really want to purchase a good racing game. Racing is the only type of game I can get my wife interested in playing on the PS3

Since NFS does not have split-screen offline competitions I want to stay away but can anyone that frequents this post recommend a good split screen racer other than GT5?

Also, out of the box, does GT5 give you enough track and car choices to make it fun or is all unlockable only through use? Seems as if the comments mention having to build everything through purchase. Dammit - I want the whole game out of the box if I am shucking out $60 for it. Thanks for any help.

p.s. - split screen offline a must

You get split screen offline & a limited choice of cars in the arcade mode, though I wouldn't necessarily say it was fun as it's supposed to be a sim.

The full GT mode is single player & that's where the majority of the cars are. Really, you are going to struggle to find a decent split screen racer if you are on PS3.

It seems as if split screen went away after PS2 was replaced. I remember playing all kind of split screen games, most racing in PS2 and PS1 days. Shame. It does seem like PS3 games have some strange memory problems - like something is not configured correctly that minimizes old but simple PS2 options. Thanks for the reply, I was going to PM you fick because of the insight a few posts above.

No worries, always happy to help a fellow petrol head. Especially one with a mrs who is willing to play racing games. My jealousy is in abundance. Mention racing to my other half & all she does is hurumph & start complaining.

Seriously though, not being a fanboy here as I was very late to the 360, but Microsoft's house brick is the way to go for racing. Forza seriously kicks GT arse & there are more of the older games (NFS for example) that you can play in the higher res, and without ending up with a nasty box with big black borders either side like you can get when playing PS2 titles on a b/c PS3.

Final say on GT5, then I will likely no longer bother with this thread.

I've got rid of it. Trying to grind through the championships, soooo many cars without interior views & last gen rendering, loooong load time (even with full install), even longer updates to fix non-essential bollocks, dumb AI (despite being patched to allegedly improve it), floaty cars that don't seem to touch the tarmac... and too many other niggles to be arsed listing, have seen GT5 removed from my collection.

The reason for this post? Simple. Get an Xbox360, buy Forza 3, revel in every car having a full interior view, better graphics, the handy rewind feature (a godsend on those long races when you are tiring after 30+ laps), the better weight and feel of the cars, the better damage modelling, both aesthetically & performance based, the better modding/graphic options for the cars, the ability to swap engines with other models by the same manufacturer... the list goes on.

As a grade A petrol-head with many years experience of driving, from a reverse-steering Fiat 126 to an 18ton gun carrier and pretty much everything in between, I can honestly say that Forza 3 pisses all over GT5.

It's not a preference. It's a fact.

Frankly, Polyphony & Sony should be embarrassed to make us all wait for something so incomplete.
Except the graphics of Forza 3 aren't as good as GT5 and neither is the interior modelling.

Play with a wheel and GT5 has the best driving model out there. The 'game' is pretty crap though.

Give me the style and presentation of Shift 2 with the gameplay of GT5 = best racer ever.

GT5 honestly has the worst presentation ever and the career mode is boring as ever. It's been the same rehashed career mode form the past 5 games. But at least they've got the hardest part done right - the driving physics. So I hope GT6 actually delivers a 'RACING GAME' this time around.

I wrote a really long reply to this. Got all angry at Polyphony digital for their lazy GT3 rehash with a few extras. The site logged me out and I lost it all :folarm:

So now comes the abridged version:

GT5 Pro's: Weather (albeit limited). Used car showroom.
GT5 Con's: Poor collision detection. Slowdown after gentle nudge (akin to old arcade racers). Terrible implementation of damage system. Circa 80% of cars and 25% of tracks are GT3/PS2 models. Worse than GT3 handling. Poor menus. Slow loading. Painfully long installs. And much more.

Basically, if Forza 4 included weather and a used car system (not just bought over live), then GT 5 would be completely redundant.

Just for the record, I've played every GT to death. 3 was the biggest jump in quality and 'feel'. The series ever since has frankly stagnated.

Edit: Physics/schmyisics. Play GT3. You'll see how the handling in GT5 has deteriorated.

Edit 2: Graphics/schmafics. GT's premium cars and some track lighting do benefit from the game running at a higher res. But only them. The standard cars & the majority of the track detail are worse graphically than Forza3

On a final, final note; How shit is GT5 modification? No engine changes? Limited drive change? No boring our engines, christ, you can't even upgrade brakes, never mind no wheel changes on the standard cars.

Sorry, but I'll take Forza 3 every day. If I had to choose a second, it'd be GT3.

(Not very abridged I know, but it just riles me that in 5 years they barely managed what Turn 10 did in 18 months. I'll stop now. Sorry).

Playing Forza 3 is like driving on rails. The cars are glued on the roads despite all assists off.

Do you play GT5 with all assists off and with a wheel? For a console game, it has the best physics out there. Even the PC sim community agrees with that one. I'm not sure how you can say the physics have deteriorated from GT3 (which is an arcade racer in comparison). As a game, it is pretty bad, but the key one thing it was praised for is the driving model.

I've got both Forza 3 and GT5 and the lighting in the former looks crappy. The game looks cartoony. I know many of the tracks look like shit, but those which were actually modelled in GT5 look photorealistic. The premium cars look fucking amazing too. Most detailed cockpits I have ever seen.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmMgxISrAeQ&feature=related

Photorealism > Cartoon graphics.

Customisation is better in Forza although the livery editor sucks. Who wants to paint shit all over their car to make it look worse? Heh.

The best racing game I have played so far however is Shift 2. But the cars handle like absolute shit. Cars feel like they are being driven on ice. All they do is slip and slide. Although every other aspect is great. Great customisation, superb tracks, great graphics, great engine sounds, and good A.I. Also, I love the menus and presentation. Career mode is better than GT5 or Forza 3, both which I gave up after completing 70 or so percent.

You guys are extremely helpful. Thanks Fick and Viper. I really wanted to get shift 2 until I read no offline split screen. EA Sum bitches. I cannot believe a racing game would even be invented with that option left out.

I have my wife so interested now that she keeps asking me when are you going out to get it so I guess I am stuck into getting GT5. I better take care of that before she loses interest.

Loading time is probably the item that scares me most about GT5 - I have seen that problem identified in every review of the game in addition to what I have read here by Fick. I am an impatient one but I guess I will grin and bear it. After Shift2, I wish Forza was made for PS3 Thanks again fellas.

Ah - forgot about the loading times. It's the reason why I gave up playing GT5. But it was still such a good racer.

Ferrari 458 Italia @ Nurburgring Day/Night =

Driving experience and graphics are unmatched. As for everything else? Don't expect too much and it's not too bad!

I reckon GT6 could be the best racer out there if they fix all the issues from GT5. :p

Needs better loading, proper damage, more tracks, no standard cars, better sound effects, better menus, and a better career mode.

What about steering - I am waiting through the 20 minute initial download right now and reading the manual and I think I am getting very dissapointed by reading that you can't steer by simply tilting the controller. Maybe I am reading incorrectly. I might already want my money back. I had GT prologue in my hand because 1/3 the price and didn't need everything, just want to have some fun racing...but went with the big guns of GT5. Ah, gift card money, who cares. Could have blown it on FIFA11 and been really pissed.

I'll let you know in a couple of weeks, when I get back into PS3 land. This is going to be one of the first games I buy.

Does anyone know how to qualify for a race. I remember that option was in previous versions but I can't find it in this edition.

Thanks in advance

Can you just clarify what you mean here?

Do you mean you want to play without the assists on, like traction control and ABS, and you want to know what the best setup is for a car to counter-act loss of control etc?

If so, any cars in particular?

It varies greatly depending on the drive type (front, rear, 4WD) and of course which model of car we're talking about.

On a separate note, anyone who is actively playing GT5 - add me on PSN and we'll hook up for some racing. There's got to be at least 5-6 of us that can get online together for some competitive fun.

Definitely. I've had some interaction with Fick in the past, but apart from that, I think the problem is that i've never thought of GT as an online game, let alone a competitive one. I've never played GT online, but it'd be a blast to get some races on the go.

never went online with gt5; are there the typical lobbies where we can find each other? also I imagine we play with raw data so someone who races all the time doesn't have all this money to buy some crazy car so far beyond the others.

I would be willing to give it a try later today, can be on around 9pm Bolton time.

Well I don't think any of us would put each other at such a disadvantage, that'd just be stupid. I think races with all of using the same car could be interesting, see who is the BEST racer ;)

IC - you are correct in that it's a lobby system. Whoever hosts the lobby has control over any restrictions and settings.

You can restrict horsepower, car weight and performance points, or simply stipulate that everyone has to race with a certain (stock) make and model of car. The pre-determined list to choose from is probably similar to that available in the Arcade mode (although I've not played Arcade mode so can't be sure).

I personally prefer to use cars from my garage and simply set some limitations that keep things even. If you set a weight and horsepower limit then everyone's car is going to be fairly similar in stature - similarly, the idea behind performance points as a limit is that wildly different cars can compete and, in theory, be competitive.

One thing to note, in preparation for playing online - you can only select cars from your garage that you have set as favourites. Therefore, in preparation of playing online go through your garage and favourite all the cars you use (not sure if there's an upper limit - I think I have favourited most of my cars).

I would be very game for getting online at 9pm tonight and going for a spin. Even if we just cruise and get to know each other's ability or slag each other's cars off. I have a headset for ultimate banter.

Just so you know - there are two schools of thought in GT online. Clean racing and dirty racing.

I race clean and refuse to race with people who race dirty. People who race dirty are the type of people who will approach a hairpin in fifth gear and use the car in front as their braking zone, wiping out the opposition in the process.

Accidental comings together happen, of course, but people who go out of their way to turn it into a destruction derby tend to ruin otherwise decent races.

The only reason I mention it is because it really is a maker-or-breaker in terms of everyone enjoying the racing. If you have 4 people and one of them is a dirty racer, he will ruin it for the other 3 every time.

Does anyone have muscularmatt's PSN name?

Abu - I will also add you.

Would be good to get a little PESGaming GT5 session on the go. Tonight at 9pm.

If any of you are struggling for cars, I'm sure those of us with more extensive garages can lend you some to race with.
