By the way Nifty, i've just put GT in for the first time in ages, and apparently I have to install 10 updates, and it's just gotten to 4% in ten minutes....on the first bar

This could take a while

That's cool - you'll be there just in time.

Abu and Iron should both be online by about 9:30, so we can have a few cruises.

Iron said he has a total of two cars in his garage.

Whenever you guys get online, go to Community --> then find me by username (polski_sklep) and click on me --> then click on the coffee cup icon which is the Lounge. Will then show you a list of people in the lounge and give you the choice to join.

Unlike many other games, there is no way to directly invite friends in (annoying).

 Just received news my mother will be watching Wild At Heart, so I won't get on until about 9:30 either.

No problem.

Me and Abu are in the lounge now.

Waiting on you and Iron.

I've already set up the settings to my liking. 500PP limit, unrestricted everything else.

Car damage/tyre wear on and the only assist is ABS.

16 lap race.

Edit: Iron is here as well. Just you, Dale. Just you.

Sounds good to me. I wonder if we would be able to set up some sort of league table, like Lounge Mode in FIFA. That'd be class.

Yeah I doubt i'll be on much tonight, these updates are fully taking the piss. I'll try and get on as soon as I can, but it probably won't be until later. Don't wait up for me

Christ i'm out of touch with this game. Need a few more practice sessions I think.

that was the reason I bought the game in the first place - something she and I could do together on the ps3 (if they only had mario bros for PS3 she wouldn't curse the thing). we played for a month or so and she lost interest, then I did. this will get me back into it. Practice? I never saw you and nifty after the starting flag was waved. maybe some skid marks you guys left 49seconds in front of me. i need some fundamentals. fun time however.

Yeah fundamentals is what it's all about. I used to have some rules that I went by that saw me alright, and I had forgot those. With more playing time i'll remember though.

That Golf really was a total bag of shit man, spinning out on a gentle curve

@viper, yeah man, it would be good to get a good handful of people. tonight was first time online, a lot of nice perks in online play.

@dale, the last race seemed the most in control for me, slower cars

I know they released the 'XL Edition' in USA which includes all DLC (additional cars, tracks and updates) on the disc. I'm waiting for a similar release in the UK tbh!

I feel so embarrassed after yesterday, considering the fact that my lap times were over 30 seconds than the average lap time. Even though I won, Nifty kept on going back to IronCity to give us a chance and when he was driving, he just zoomed past us without skidding!

Nifty, what did you set your ABS to?

oh hell abu, I didn't realize you were retrosword last night. I was going to check this entire site today to see who that username was linked to. I need a lookup key.

I have a lot of practicing to do. those first few races we were all using different cars and it showed. I couldn't get past 117mph and you guys were probably around 145-150. we raced with Dale later and standardized the cars, didn't help me figuratively, only literally.

I race online like I play PES online. Offline I am steady, then I go online and I throw all the basics out the window and slam on the accelerator. I had to laugh at myself last night - if a mouse was put into an experiment such that if it stepped on a trigger and it got electrozapped it would stop stepping on that trigger after only a few trials. But I failed to learn the same lesson time and time again at each hairloop curve as I battered the barrier at 100mph, pedal to the metal.

Ali

It is happening again
I race clean and refuse to race with people who race dirty. People who race dirty are the type of people who will approach a hairpin in fifth gear and use the car in front as their braking zone, wiping out the opposition in the process.

Accidental comings together happen, of course, but people who go out of their way to turn it into a destruction derby tend to ruin otherwise decent races.

We used to call this "Gran Turismoing" back in the day. This could apply to all racing games.

Now there seems to be a bit of interest I'm half tempted to see if I can pick this up again (on the cheapo, mind!)

Depends how long the interest lasts... wasn't much fun in single player.

Not even sure where my b/tooth headset is any more... :hmm:

Won't be the same if I can't hurl abuse.

Edit: £14 at Asda... why the hell not. Currently doing god knows how many updates

Will try and find my headset, but worst case scenario I'll let my driving do the talking :erm:

I guess I should purchase this game again considering there seems to be a small active community here...

If you can pick it up on the cheap I would certainly recommend it.

To be honest, despite its flaws that I'm sure are exaggerated by purists, there is certainly a hell of a lot right with the game.

The online element is extremely good - in fact, if we get it to a point where we have 5, 6, maybe 7-8 people all competing on a level playing field it will blow the single player out of the water. The AI just aren't realistic when it comes down to it.

So far, it seems like we have:

Me
muscularmatt
Dale C.
abu97
IronCity
fick

Sminky has said if there are a few of us playing regularly he would be interested in buying the game and joining us, too. I'm sure there are others lurking who will only need to see there's some life in this thread to get involved.

The first thing you need to do, after a while away from playing racing games, is to exaggerate the use of racing lines.

Approach every corner on the very outside of the track and try and take the apex tight to the inside. If, on your way round a lap, there is a particular corner you miss your turning point on, remember it and mentally prepare yourself for it next time around - then, early-brake it to ensure you get the line right.

To take that a step further and give you reason enough to early-brake is the simple, four-word truth - slow out, fast in. If you go into a corner slowly, you'll be able to get out of it quickly and then allow your momentum to manifest itself as a quicker way to get to top speed.

Simply put - if you approach a corner too fast, you'll lose more time slowing down to get around it cleanly/in the gravel than you would if you approached it a little too slow and then were able to pick up speed on your way out.

I honestly have no idea how you guys spin out driving these slow cars. Please tell me that you at least had all of your assists off? If you did that with traction control on you should be ashamed of yourself.

This gamefest just got muscular.

I've accepted your friend request. Hopefully see you on the track soon, buddy.

abu97 said:

I think in that first race I had all of my assists off, including ABS set to zero.

For those of you that play GT5 with the assists on, let me tell you something; turn them off. At the very least, turn traction control off.

Once you get the hang of driving with TC off, you will find you are a way better racer.

Although I am inclined to allow people to use it in order to promote fairer gameplay, any victory you attain with it on will be rendered obsolete by the 'hardcore.'

I found that for a time I really struggled with no longer having traction control to allow me to grip the track in such an arcade-feeling way - but then, when I got used to it, it felt so much more rewarding to be able to handle a turn.

The moment the penny dropped and I suddenly 'got it' I was secretly very proud. You will be too and it will be worth it.

That was quick! I didn't realise anyone lived that close to an Asda. It's one of those supermarkets that everyone always seems to complain about not living near enough to. "If I had an Asda, I'd definitely shop there!" is a phrase that I have heard more often than many.

Will be good to have you on board. The reason I didn't add you was because I noticed you'd got rid of GT5. Will add you now.

My headset has always been flaky on GT5 - but then I think I might need to set the voice chat to a higher quality to make it work. Any advice or insight into this, Fick?

Regarding your questions about headsets last night, Iron - the headset I have is the following:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ORB-Wireless-Bluetooth-PS3-Headset/dp/B000A63KW4

I picked it up because that was the one they had in Blockbuster Video at the time and I'll be honest - it is excellent. It is small, unintrusive and (except for flakiness in GT5) the quality seems good enough to me.

Currently £10 on Amazon, which is basically nothing.

For anyone who wishes to join the PESGaming GT5 ring, add polski_sklep on PS3 and let me know you're a GT5 person. I will try and have a lounge open most evenings this week so pop in and have a race or a cruise around.

Edited my message at 16:33 Nifty :D Even I'm not that quick.

Got it on the way back from picking my Subaru up after it's MOT/service.

Not a clue on the headset, it's been a long time since I used mine & it didn't connect properly back then...

Edit: 80% of the way through the updates, after having to do a PS update as well. Will try to get on later (after the missus goes to bed), otherwise It'll be a warm up with Iron during the day (I'm off work this week!)
