I guess I should purchase this game again considering there seems to be a small active community here...
If you can pick it up on the cheap I would certainly recommend it.
To be honest, despite its flaws that I'm sure are exaggerated by purists, there is certainly a hell of a lot right with the game.
The online element is extremely good - in fact, if we get it to a point where we have 5, 6, maybe 7-8 people all competing on a level playing field it will blow the single player out of the water. The AI just aren't realistic when it comes down to it.
So far, it seems like we have:

Sminky has said if there are a few of us playing regularly he would be interested in buying the game and joining us, too. I'm sure there are others lurking who will only need to see there's some life in this thread to get involved.

Yeah fundamentals is what it's all about.
The first thing you need to do, after a while away from playing racing games, is to exaggerate the use of racing lines.
Approach every corner on the very outside of the track and try and take the apex tight to the inside. If, on your way round a lap, there is a particular corner you miss your turning point on, remember it and mentally prepare yourself for it next time around - then, early-brake it to ensure you get the line right.
To take that a step further and give you reason enough to early-brake is the simple, four-word truth - slow out, fast in. If you go into a corner slowly, you'll be able to get out of it quickly and then allow your momentum to manifest itself as a quicker way to get to top speed.
Simply put - if you approach a corner too fast, you'll lose more time slowing down to get around it cleanly/in the gravel than you would if you approached it a little too slow and then were able to pick up speed on your way out.

That Golf really was a total bag of shit man, spinning out on a gentle curve
I honestly have no idea how you guys spin out driving these slow cars. Please tell me that you at least had all of your assists off? If you did that with traction control on you should be ashamed of yourself.

This gamefest just got muscular.
I've accepted your friend request. Hopefully see you on the track soon, buddy.

Nifty, what did you set your ABS to?
I think in that first race I had all of my assists off, including ABS set to zero.
For those of you that play GT5 with the assists on, let me tell you something; turn them off. At the very least, turn traction control off.
Once you get the hang of driving with TC off, you will find you are a way better racer.
Although I am inclined to allow people to use it in order to promote fairer gameplay, any victory you attain with it on will be rendered obsolete by the 'hardcore.'
I found that for a time I really struggled with no longer having traction control to allow me to grip the track in such an arcade-feeling way - but then, when I got used to it, it felt so much more rewarding to be able to handle a turn.
The moment the penny dropped and I suddenly 'got it' I was secretly very proud. You will be too and it will be worth it.

Now there seems to be a bit of interest I'm half tempted to see if I can pick this up again (on the cheapo, mind!)

Edit: £14 at Asda... why the hell not. Currently doing god knows how many updates
That was quick! I didn't realise anyone lived that close to an Asda. It's one of those supermarkets that everyone always seems to complain about not living near enough to. "If I had an Asda, I'd definitely shop there!" is a phrase that I have heard more often than many.
Will be good to have you on board. The reason I didn't add you was because I noticed you'd got rid of GT5. Will add you now.
My headset has always been flaky on GT5 - but then I think I might need to set the voice chat to a higher quality to make it work. Any advice or insight into this, Fick?
Regarding your questions about headsets last night, Iron - the headset I have is the following:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/ORB-Wireless-Bluetooth-PS3-Headset/dp/B000A63KW4
I picked it up because that was the one they had in Blockbuster Video at the time and I'll be honest - it is excellent. It is small, unintrusive and (except for flakiness in GT5) the quality seems good enough to me.
Currently £10 on Amazon, which is basically nothing.
For anyone who wishes to join the PESGaming GT5 ring, add polski_sklep on PS3 and let me know you're a GT5 person. I will try and have a lounge open most evenings this week so pop in and have a race or a cruise around.
